“A roast sounds great on the grill,” he said.

“I brought dessert,” Faith said. “I’ll admit I didn’t make it. My brother did. He’s a chef and loves to bake. He knew we were coming. I guess he wanted me to make a good impression.”

Sawyer rolled his eyes over that. Again, it was nice that her family had done it. But he was thrilled to get any dessert Liam made. He never thought he had such a sweet tooth before.

“That is very sweet of you,” his grandmother said. “And it’s the thought that counts.”

“There’s Grandpa,” he said when his grandfather came in the back door off the kitchen. “Looking good. This is Faith. Faith, my grandfather, Curt. You know my grandmother’s name is Gretta.”

“I feel great,” his grandfather said. “And your grandmother said I’ve got a nice manly scar on my chest.”

He felt his face flush, but Faith laughed and he figured it couldn’t get much better than this.

He was wrong though. Because three hours later they’d finished dinner and Faith was in the kitchen cleaning up with his grandmother when his mother came around the back.

“There you are,” his mother said, looking at his grandfather. Then she turned and saw him sitting there. “Sawyer.”

“Mom,” he said. He wanted to ask what she was doing here, but after their last fight, he’d rather not engage at all.

“What’s going on, Lucy?” his father asked. “Why are you looking for me?”

“I just needed to stop over and check on you.”

His grandfather lifted an eyebrow. “You haven’t been here in almost two months and today you decide you want to come over?”

“She’s here because she found out Sawyer was going to be in town again,” his grandmother said, coming out on the deck.

“How did she find out?” he asked his grandmother. “Did you tell her?”

He didn’t think his grandmother would be that sneaky.

“No,” his grandmother said. “We had lunch earlier this week. I was running errands and asked if we could meet. I wanted to see how things were going since I knew she was having issues with Tim.”

Sawyer wasn’t shocked there were things going on. He wasn’t going to ask.

“I saw the text on Mom’s phone when she went to the bathroom,” his mother said.

“Not surprised that you are into snooping now,” he said to his mother.

His mother only shrugged. “I thought we could try to clear the air some.”

“Why?” he asked. “You haven’t wanted to do it for most of my life and now you do?”

He turned when Faith came out. It was the last thing he wanted to deal with today. “Who’s this?” his mother asked.

“Faith is Sawyer’s girlfriend,” his grandmother said.

“You never told me he was dating someone,” his mother said to his grandmother.

Faith moved forward. “It’s nice to meet you, Lucy.”

He’d give his girlfriend credit for putting a smile on her face. She knew what happened the last time he talked to his mother and that it was over fifteen years before that.

“Yeah,” his mother said. “Why didn’t I know you had a girlfriend?”

His mother was looking at him. “Why don’t I know of any of the men that come in and out of your life? Because you don’t talk to me. I thought we established that last time. If you wanted to know more, you could have reached out in the past few months and didn’t. My number hasn’t changed.”

His mother lifted her nose in the air. “I didn’t think you’d stop over,” his grandmother said. “Is there a reason for it? Sawyer is right, you haven’t made an attempt before now and you think you can come here today? Or is there a more selfish reason? Tim?”
