She truly understood, which made him one lucky man when he never felt that way a day in his life.

Or maybe she didn’t care as much for him or their relationship and was fine with her time alone. And if that was the case, it was best to keep his thoughts to himself.

Or she liked where they were because it continued to play with her aunt.

He didn’t think it was the last thing. Not that they talked much about those things anymore. Though Faith did give him a heads-up about her aunt stopping to get the twins last week.

He did have fun playing with them and going to the park. It’d felt cozy like a family. He thought maybe Faith felt the same way, but she never said a word so he wasn’t going to either.

“They want you to not always feel like you need to do everything for them,” she said. “It sounds like they enjoy their independence.”

“They do,” he said. “They’ve always been that way. And now that my grandfather is feeling much better, I think they are getting along more. Not that they ever didn’t get along, but it’s not the same as my other grandparents.”

“Everyone fights,” she said. “My family does it, but it’s a productive way I think.”

It reminded him that he and Faith hadn’t fought. They’d joked and disagreed but nothing major. He wasn’t sure what to think of that.

“My parents fought all the time. Nothing productive. My grandparents we are visiting today, I think it’s a combination of productive and not. They always resolved their issues though. It still caused a lot of tension. My other grandparents, I just never felt any tension in that house over anything.”

“I think that is how I felt growing up,” she said. “My father is laid back. My mother is quiet. But they speak their minds.”

“Just like you,” he said.

“I find it’s easier that way. You know where the other stands.”

Which again, made him wonder if she didn’t feel for him the same as he felt for her. She hadn’t spoken her mind.

“Exactly,” he said.

The rest of the drive there, they just talked about his job. She was also so helpful and he was throwing things out that were happening. She gave him ideas that he’d look into later.

They got to his grandparents' house and parked. “This is a cute house.”

“It’s old,” he said. “It’s a nice neighborhood. I think at one point it started to get a bit run down with the older generation like my grandparents not being able to care for it as much. But younger families started to buy the houses as starter homes and put money into them. I could see where it could go either way and I’m glad it didn’t go downhill here.”

He’d painted the white trim around the windows the last time he was here to set the house up. It looked so much better outside even if the inside needed some updating.

“I think it’s wonderful. My parents live in a neighborhood similar. Older craftsman homes. The same as Liam. He bought his knowing the neighborhood was improving and it’s great now. It’s worth so much more.”

“Where do you see yourself?” he asked. Might as well give a try and see where it went.

“Meaning a house?” she asked. “I like where I am now, but I’m sure I’ll grow out of the space at some point if it’s not just me.”

She was grinning at him and he’d take that as a win.

“Sawyer,” his grandmother said when she opened the door. “I’m so glad you could come for the day. And you must be Faith. Can I give you a hug?”

“Sure,” she said. He found it cute in a way. Faith didn’t seem like the hugging type of person, but she gave his grandmother one and he could appreciate her going that extra effort.

“My grandson seems happy now. Much happier than he’s ever been. I want to say it has something to do with you.”

“I’m good that way,” she said.

He grinned. “She is. Where is Grandpa?”

“He’s out back cleaning the grill. He’s all excited to put a nice roast on it today.”

It made Sawyer feel good to know his grandfather was doing things he’d always loved to do in the past.
