“We all have choices,” he said.

“We do,” she said. “But I’ve made mine. Let’s go try to enjoy this party as best as we can and we can take our leave and make sure we are in a good spot. I’m getting there.”

“Me too,” he said. “With your help.”

“Marci,”Jolene said hours later. “I’m not sure what is going on. I thought things were great with Sawyer and Faith and yet they aren’t looking as close and cozy as I’d hoped today.”

“You were hoping for an engagement,” her sister-in-law Diane said to her. “We know it.”

“Maybe,” Jolene said. “I know it was optimistic on my part.”

“You always get ahead of yourself,” Diane said.

Carolyn hadn’t come. Jade and Adriana both gave birth a few weeks ago and didn’t make the trip, Carolyn staying to help out with her new grandson and granddaughter.

But Diane and Grant were here with their three kids and their families, along with Noah and Drake and their families.

The more the merrier in her eyes.

Just like her nieces and nephews were all here too with their significant others. Hoping Faith was going to be taking the next step wasn’t completely off the table.

“What can I say? But something has to be going on,” she said. “Do you know, Marci?”

“It’s going to be fine,” Marci said. “They might have hit a bump in the road, but it’s all good.”

“Are you sure it’s okay?” she asked.

“Positive,” Marci said. “Remember, just give it time. It’s Faith and Sawyer we are talking about.”

“If you say so,” she said. She turned to Diane. “Any news to report on Trent?”

“No,” Diane said. “This one is going slow too. We are working it though. It’s nice to watch you and all your mistakes so we know what not to do.”

Jolene wanted to argue over that but decided to give her sister-in-law the point on that one.

Epilogue

Six Months Later

“Why didyou want to come out so early?” Faith asked Sawyer on a Sunday morning, early December.

“Because I like to get our walk in early and you do too.”

“You’ve been taking Fred running at times; how come you wanted a walk today?”

He just shrugged at her. She wasn’t sure what was going on with him and why he was being kind of...secretive.

“It’s nice to walk together,” he said. “I thought you liked doing that on the weekends.”

“I do,” she said.

It’d been a great six months. Things were going so well with them. They still each had their own places, but Sawyer was spending more and more time at hers.

She’d been right. The place wasn’t as big when there was more than one person and her dog in it. Maybe she’d consider looking for a house at some point. But why change anything just yet? No reason to put any pressure on him.

Since their one big argument, Sawyer had been sorry and made it up to her. She’d never seen any sign of him not trusting or believing in her and she’d made sure not to give him any reason to think that.
