She even went out of her way to tell Lonnie about Sawyer the next day. He’d said he was happy for her and he was dating someone too.

She knew in her mind there wasn’t anything to worry about. Sometimes it was just hard for people to get shit out of their heads when there was no reason for it.

They’d been walking around the park and then came up to an area by a bench. Sawyer moved over and sat down. He’d never done that before.

“Come sit by me.”

“Okay,” she said.

“What do you think, Fred? Is this the right time?”

Fred barked twice. “The right time for what?”

Sawyer pulled a ring box out of his pocket. She knew her eyes were as big as a crazy cartoon character’s. “One year ago, your dog helped me get a collar.”

Faith started to laugh. She knew what today was but wasn’t sure he remembered. She should have figured he would have with as detailed oriented as he was.

“He did,” she said.

“So Fred and I thought it was the perfect time to do this.” He flipped the lid on the ring box, and she saw the heart-shaped diamond on the thick white gold band. “You taught me to feel again, Faith. To find what was in my heart and make sure I let those I love know it.”

Her eyes were watering. “You did that yourself,” she said.

“No,” he said. “I didn’t. I had help. So I’m asking you now, will you be my wife?”

“I will,” she said. “Yes. A big fat yes.”

He slid the ring on her finger, gave her a kiss and Fred barked.

“All it took was a dog and a mugger for me to find love,” he said.

“And we are going to make sure my aunt knows it!”

“Jolene,”Carolyn said when she answered the phone. “What is going on?”

“Hang on,” she said. “We’ve got to get Diane on the line.”

She called her other sister-in-law. “Jolene,” Diane said. “Do you have news for us?”

“Sawyer and Faith are engaged!”

“That’s wonderful,” Diane said. “You were hoping it would be soon.”

“I was. At least they didn’t make me wait for the holidays like so many of the others have.”

When Faith stopped over today with Sawyer and Fred, she’d looked at her niece's hand and saw the ring and started to jump up and down before they could tell her the news.

“That’s wonderful,” Carolyn said. “Gavin has to be thrilled. He’d called this all along.”

Jolene wanted to stomp her foot, but she was sitting on the couch next to her husband.

He reached over and patted her leg. “I am feeling pretty good about this one. They tried to tell us they did it on their own.”

“Don’t they all want to say that?” Carolyn said.

Jolene explained the situation with the mugger and how Fred caught a criminal and Sawyer chased the guy down.
