“Of course,” he said. “Are they in the storage space above the garage?”

“They are,” his grandmother said.

Sawyer went out to the garage, found the ladder, moved it over and climbed up, then lifted the door and pulled himself up into the space. He knew the box since he put it there last year. He should have remembered and offered to get it down earlier in the month for her.

He found the box and moved it to the opening, climbed back down with it on his shoulder, and then put it on the floor before putting the ladder back.

His father did have limited movement with the leg he’d busted up years ago in that accident. He’d had more than a few surgeries on it over the years and now it was fine and he moved well enough. He was still able to drive for a living. But there were some things he couldn’t do.

“Here you go,” Sawyer said, bringing it into the house. “Do you need me to help you put anything up? Where’s Grandpa?”

“He ran to the store. He wants to get a nice bottle of scotch for next Sunday. He’s all out of his.”

He laughed. “Scotch will go down well,” he said. He enjoyed a nice glass with his father and grandfather on the holidays.

“I figured as much.”

He turned his head when there was a knock on the back door to see his grandmother’s neighbor open it and come in.

“Sawyer,” Jolene Fierce said. “I was just coming over to see if Marci wanted to have a cup of coffee and chat. You know we like to visit and unwind together.”

“I do,” he said to Jolene. He’d known her for years. Not that he was close with her or anything, but he’d seen her often when his grandmother and Jolene visited just like this.

Jolene was about twenty years younger than his grandmother, he was thinking. She was probably closer to his parents’ age, but he appreciated how Gavin would come over and check in and do things when Sawyer wasn’t able to for his grandparents.

“I can leave if you’ve got plans,” Jolene said.

“No,” he said. “Grandma needed something from storage. I got it out for her.”

“Oh,” Jolene said, rubbing her hands together. “More decorations.”

“I’m a little late this year,” his grandma said, “but I know Sawyer has been busy and didn’t want to take away too much time from him.”

“Are you seeing someone?” Jolene asked. “A special lady in your life that you are busy with?”

He knew Jolene loved setting people up and wasn’t falling for this. “Just married to my job,” he said. “And happy that way.” No reason he was mentioning to anyone he had a date next week. It wasn’t even final yet in his eyes.

His grandmother was shaking her head. “That’s no way to live life.”

“It is for me,” he said, laughing. “If you don’t need anything else from me, then I think I’ll go get some food for the week and do laundry.”

He left as fast as he could and was impressed he got out without more comments about him being single.

“Was it something I said?”Jolene asked Marci. She was here trying to help her neighbor out with her grandson after being given the heads up when Sawyer would be here.

“You know Sawyer has always been that way,” Marci said. “I wish I could get him to slow down and see that there is more out there than his job or women that have burned him.”

Jolene frowned. “What do you mean burned? I have to know these things if I’m going to work my magic.” She had Faith in mind for Sawyer but just had to figure out how to get these two together. But if there was more that she needed to know, she had to find out too.

“Just his mother,” Marci said. “That is all I know of. Maybe an ex. It’s not something he talks to me much about. What Lucy did to him was enough to sour anyone though.”

“Poor kid,” Jolene said. “But if I can figure out how to put Faith in front of him, I think it might work. They would have so much in common from what you’ve told me about Sawyer.”

Her niece was going to be difficult though. But with everything being so analytical and factual in Faith’s life, she’d share that with Sawyer.

The problem was, Faith knew all the tricks that had been used over the years and she was a stubborn one. She wouldn’t be surprised if Faith would stay single just to annoy her family.
