He shrugged. “Don’t try so hard,” he said. Someone was waving him over. “Excuse me.”

He left and was thankful for it. Five minutes later James came up to him. “How come you brushed off Ellen?”

“Asshole,” he said low in his throat. “You invited her on purpose and you know it.”

James started to laugh. “Everyone knows she has a thing for you. She’s totally not your type.”

“I’m not sure I’ve got a type, but I like what I like. She’s probably a nice person, but she doesn’t do it for me. You invited her to just rile me up if you know she’s not my type.”

She didn’t have long light brown hair. A smaller build that made him feel like he had to protect her even though he never wanted to feel that way before.

As he’d thought, she wasn’t Faith. And Faith had Fred to protect her.

It was as he’d said. Ellen tried too hard. Faith was just herself.

Faith was refreshing.

“Yeah, I know. Sondra pressured me to do it,” James said quietly.

“How does she know about Ellen?” he asked, frowning.

“When you find a woman someday you’ll understand. They know everything.”

“I doubt that,” he said. “But we know you probably talk in your sleep.”

“He does,” Sondra said from behind him. “You didn’t want to talk to Ellen? She’s all by herself over there.”

“She’s not by herself,” he said, turning and trying to find her. Yep, Ellen had her hand on another guy’s arm and was leaning in close like she’d just done to him. He wasn’t an idiot. Not for him.

“Guess you’re right,” Sondra said. “Hmmm. I feel duped.”

“Don’t,” he said. “Some people know how to work a room. They will always be that way.”

Sawyer felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He pulled it out and was shocked to see a text from Faith with just three letters: “OMG.”

He wanted to know what she was talking about, but it wasn’t the place for it. He’d find out soon enough.

“Faith, what are you doing hiding in here?” her cousin Ella asked her.

She turned quickly from where she was texting Sawyer. She thought he’d reply, but he didn’t. It’d been about two minutes and she decided to leave. No reason to stay at this point. He was probably having a great time with his friends and she was stuck getting ganged up on.

The story of her life as a child and now as an adult.

As a kid she walked away; here she didn’t have much of a choice though her family meant no harm.

“Nothing,” she said.

“You’re hiding from my mother, aren’t you?” Ella asked. She had her son, Landon, in her arms. He was reaching for Faith so she shifted and put him on her hip.

“He’s a hefty one,” she said.

“Takes after his daddy,” Ella said. “And you didn’t answer me. My mother won’t leave you alone, will she?”

“I knew she was going to be targeting me now since I’m the last one standing, but I kind of hoped she’d go after Ivan and Kendra.”

“She was earlier,” Ella said. “But she isn’t getting far with them.”
