Fred jumped up and pushed Faith out of the way, then put his front paws on Sawyer’s chest as is if to claim him.

“I knew it,” she said, stomping her foot.

“What?”

“I wasn’t sure why he barked last time. I thought it might have been that he didn’t want you touching me, but he doesn’t want me touchingyou.”

“No,” he said, laughing.

“Yes. It’s like the bro code thing or something. Fred. Down,” she said, pointing to the floor.

Fred dropped his head and did as he was told, but looked like he wasn’t happy about it either.

“Should we try this again?” he asked. He was enjoying this more than he thought he would.

“Yes,” she said.

Her arms went around Sawyer and Fred barked, but Faith hissed and Fred stopped. Damn, that dog was trained well.

Faith put her lips to his, but he kept his eyes open and watched the dog looking as if he was upset. Faith opened her eyes and noticed him watching her dog and stopped.

“What?” he asked.

“Really? I’ve got to compete with my dog to get attention from you?”

He couldn’t stop the laughter. “No. Tell me what to do with him. I’m afraid to make it worse.”

“Let’s eat,” she said. “Don’t feed him or itwillmake it worse. He has to know I’m still his boss.”

“His mother,” he said. “He knows that.”

She sighed. “I know. You’ve got a way with dogs.”

“I almost signed up for the K-9 unit, but I’d have to move to an apartment that allowed dogs and didn’t want to. Plus I always knew I wanted to be a detective.”

“I think Fred can sense that you’re a dog person.”

She got two plates out and put his on one and hers on another.

The sauce was warmed up in a bowl that she stuck in the microwave.

“Maybe,” he said and started to eat. She cut a piece off and then broke it in pieces and turned to put it in Fred’s bowl. Fred was staring at him and he grabbed a tiny piece of the bread and dropped his hand down to feed the dog without Faith seeing. It was the same thing she was giving him anyway.

Fred was looking at him and he looked back at the dog to make sure the furry mutt knew it was their secret.

When the dog bowl was put on the floor with more food in it, Fred went running and ate his lunch.

“So,” she said. “We have to figure this out.”

“You have to tell me what to do with Fred.”

“That is the least of my worries. My aunt and uncle are more troublesome. Thankfully, I don’t live that close to them so they can see me daily. And I don’t go into the pub or restaurant a lot either.”

“I was there not that long ago with my father for dinner.”

“My aunt’s reach is pretty far. Not many know I’m her niece and they don’t put the name together, but if they do and we are out together, she’ll find out.”

“Charlotte is a big city, but we don’t always have to stay downtown,” he said.
