There was part of her that wanted to do more, but then she told herself, she’d never been that way before and wasn’t going to start now.

Besides, she wasn’t sure how Fred was going to react either. This was all new to her.

“Hi,” she said. Sawyer moved in right away with a kiss for her and a pet for Fred. The dog was quick to move in front of her, almost knocking her out of the way to get to his new best friend.

“Someone is happy to see me,” he said.

“Me or the dog?” she asked.

“How about both are happy to see me?”

“I guess the bigger question is which one of us are you more happy to see?” Sawyer was on a bent knee rubbing Fred behind the ears, her dog in heaven.

“Happy to see you both,” he said.

“Here,” she said, handing over the roller to get the dog hair off of him. She was used to this, not that Sawyer seemed to mind. “Did you end up having to work today?”

“I did,” he said. “Spent most of the night dealing with something, then went back in first thing to put it to bed.”

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Can I ask what it was?”

“Just a case James and I have been working on. My informant got arrested on another charge.”

“Yikes,” she said. “Guess he’s not that reliable.”

He started to laugh at her. “Most informants have records. That is how they can be flipped. Anyway, he gave my name and I was called. No way I was having James go down to deal with it in the middle of the night.”

“That’s nice of you,” she said. “You’re kind of a softie.”

He stood up and took his jacket off and hung it up. “Not so sure about that. Just that I was a kid growing up with a father gone all the time. I know what it’s like. For something simple like this, there is no reason for him to get up and go out.”

She thought that was nice of him. It showed his character, but she was getting a good idea of what Sawyer was like anyway.

“The guy couldn’t just sit in jail?” she asked. “Especially if he committed a crime?”

He laughed at her again. “I made him do just that. He wasn’t happy, but what he is doing for me had nothing to do with the DWI he got last night. I went down to tell him that because he was putting up such a fit and there was no way I was letting the officer in the jail have to deal with it.”

Again, nice of him. “And this morning you had to go back and get him out?” she asked.

“Nope. He had to post his own bail, but I had to go back in and deal with the paperwork and figure out how to get another informant. That one is going to be too dicey for me.”

She was glad she didn’t have to deal with that. “Too confusing for me,” she said. “I deal in facts. It is what it is, or it’s not. Science.”

He tugged on a lock of her hair. “If only it were that easy. And trust me, I wish it were. I’d love to say things should be based on right and wrong, but I know there is a lot of gray. Sometimes you’ve got to give into something small to get something big at the end.”

“I see that on TV,” she said. “I didn’t think it was the truth though.”

“Unfortunately it is,” he said. “Did your week get any easier?”

“No,” she said. “Not that it was hard or anything. It’s just busy and will continue to be.”

“I look at my job that way. There are more negatives than positives so I try to shut it off at the end of the day. When something positive happens I focus on that.”

“If only more in the world did that,” she said. “I’ve got some snacks if you’re hungry.”

“It smells good in here. What are you making?”

“A roast beef. I figured we’ve got time, but I put meats and cheeses and some fruit on a charcuterie board.”
