Well, he’d be called, but he wouldn’t be able to go in.

“I’m so glad you are here. Maybe you’ve got a life now? A girlfriend I’m taking you from?”

He didn’t want to admit anything about Faith or their relationship. He couldn’t take the chance that it’d get back to his father when he was pretty sure his father was somehow behind this with his other grandparents.

What he didn’t understand was why everyone was so interested in his personal life.

“Nothing much going on in my life,” he said. He didn’t think that was stretching the truth too much.

“I’m glad it’s not taking you away from anyone.”

“Where is Grandpa?” he asked.

“He went to the store. He wanted to get some beer. I didn’t tell him you were coming until a short time ago.”

He lifted his eyebrow. His grandmother only did sneaky things like that when she was serious about something. “Why wait?”

“Because we would have gotten into a fight. I told him about ten minutes ago.”

Sawyer laughed. “Knowing that I’d be here soon?”

“Yes. And it would give us a chance to get on the same page. I told him I called you. I wouldn’t lie about that. And that you are staying to go to the appointment on Monday.”

He could never figure out where his mother got her genes from because she was so selfish, so unlike her parents. “How is he feeling?”

“He says he’s fine. He has good days and bad, but most mornings he’s good because he slept the night before.”

“While I’m here, is there anything you need me to do?”

The minute he asked that question he realized he hadn’t gone back to his other grandmother’s house to put the decorations away for her in the attic above the garage. Shit, he’d have to do that on Monday when he got home.

“You don’t need to do any work while you are here,” his grandmother said. “We just want to visit.”

“You can talk to me while I work,” he said. There was no way he was going to be able to just sit around for days and talk. That wasn’t him. He couldn’t do it when he was a kid and could do even less of it now.

“I knew you’d say that. There are a few things, but wait until Grandpa is here. He might annoy you enough to walk away and do those things. Then he can stew on his stubbornness.”

He grinned over that statement and then brought his bag to his old room.

When he opened the door it was exactly as it was when he was sixteen. Right before he moved. He wasn’t sure how he was going to fit on that twin bed, but he’d make do.

He pulled his clothes out of his bag and put them in a drawer, then put the rest of his things on the dresser. His grandparents didn’t have that big of a house and there was only one full bath upstairs, and a half downstairs. He’d bring his things in as he needed them.

“Tell me what needs to be done and I can get any supplies I need,” he said when he got downstairs again.

His grandmother pulled out a list and he laughed. It wasn’t long, but as he was glancing over it, he realized they were easy things his grandfather used to be able to do. But at eighty his grandparents weren’t as spry as they were years ago.

“I’ll have to run to the hardware store,” he said. Sawyer walked to the half bath and turned the water on and then off. He saw it was leaking once it was off. “Does this stop? It wasn’t leaking when I came in here.”

“Grandpa tightens it with a wrench, but then I can’t turn it back on so I wash my hands in the kitchen or just go upstairs to use that bathroom.”

“I’m going to replace the whole faucet,” he said. “It will be easier than figuring out what is causing the leak.”

Maybe he’d replace the vanity and sink if he could. It was probably as old as him. Yeah, he’d see what was in stock and would fit in his SUV.

He moved around the house checking out the other things, making notes, and figured it’d keep him busy while he was here.

“Did you put him to work already?” he heard his grandfather say.
