“We don’t need a lot of things in our lives, but I’m not letting her get stressed and worried or you either. You two were the only people I had growing up to escape to when things were bad. I’m kicking myself for not being here more to see if you needed me.”

His grandfather looked at him. “It’s not a grandchild’s job. It’s a child’s job if it needs to be done.”

“Yeah, well, it shouldn’t have been a grandparent’s job to be there for me, but my mother sure the hell wasn’t so I guess it’s time I even the score.”

His grandfather didn’t say another word after that. The two of them just drank their beer in silence.

To Be Known

“I’m glad you could come to dinner tonight,” Faith’s mother said.

“Me too,” she said. “What is going on with Aunt Jolene? I know you were at the restaurant when I was there a few days ago.”

She hadn’t reached out to her mother that night. She was hoping her mother would have called her to tell her what was going on and hadn’t.

It wasn’t like her parents to go out during the week to eat. Something told her that her parents might be in on this with her aunt and she was going to be annoyed she’d spilled what she had to her mother.

“How did you find that out?” her father asked. He was in the living room watching TV while her mother was in the kitchen.

“Liam told me. I was talking to him when I picked up dinner.”

“That boy of mine,” her father said. “He might get his mother’s shoe in his butt.”

“I need to know right now. Are you two in on this with Aunt Jolene and Uncle Gavin?”

Her father started to laugh. Her mother looked appalled.

“No!” her mother said. “Never. But I wanted to know what I could about this man they think is so perfect for you.”

“Why?” she asked.

“Because I’m your mother and need to know.”

“Do you know?” she asked her father. “You can’t keep a secret.”

Her mother laughed. “I didn’t tell him anything.”

“Your mother knows I can’t keep anything from my sister. She gets it out of me every time. I knew you were dating someone but didn’t know who.”

“Is this one of those games you two played where you don’t ask and answer but have facial expressions to know what is going on?”

She watched her parents looking at each other some more. Yep, they were doing it again.

“Maybe,” her mother said. “Dinner is almost done. Talk to me while I get it ready. I heard you had two dinners. One for Fred. Or did you share yours with Fred and the other was with Sawyer?”

“So you are dating Sawyer?” her father asked.

“Shit,” her mother said. “I slipped.”

“Dad, don’t you dare be around your sister without Mom until I’m ready for this to be known.”

“How long are you going to make me keep this a secret?” her father asked.

“I’m not sure yet. I don’t see Aunt Jolene that much and neither do the two of you. I want to know why you went to dinner. Liam ratted you out and said that you wanted to know when Aunt Jolene was there so that you could show up.”

“That son of mine,” her mother said again. “I told you. I wanted to know what was going on. You asked me the other day what I knew and I was trying to help you.”
