“Oh. But you did test the DNA on all three toothbrushes?”

“I’m not sure,” he said. “I’ll find out.”

“That’s my theory if we were playing a game. Though I know it’s not a game and real life. That the dead body isn’t who you think he is and the real person is the killer. He wanted people to think he was dead.”

He laughed at her and they went back to their dinner.

As much as she had a ball doing that, she did want to spend some time with him before she went home to Fred.

She took her leave two hours later with a waffle in a bag for her dog. She’d cut it up and he’d love it. It was only an hour past his normal dinnertime since she’d gotten out of work early.

“Look what Mommy’s got,” she said to Fred when he charged her at the door.

Fred was jumping around and she filled his food bowl for him and then went upstairs to change.

Her phone rang when she was coming back down the stairs and she saw it was Sawyer. “Do you miss me already?”

“I actually do,” he said. “But I wanted you to know that James said they only tested hair samples on the comb for a DNA match, not the toothbrushes.”

“Did you tell him why you wanted that done?” she asked.

“I couldn’t. He doesn’t know about you.”

“Oh yeah.” She didn’t want to get upset about that. It’s not like anyone knew she was dating Sawyer.

No, that wasn’t true. Her parents knew and they were the two most important people in her life. She’d think maybe he’d want to tell James who was his partner.

“Does that bother you?” he asked.

“No. We said we were keeping this a secret so that is what is happening...for now,” she said.

There was silence on the other end. “Okay. He did ask and I said it was just another thing to test. I told him what you said. He thinks I’m some fashion plate now and busting my ass for noticing those things.”

“Oh sure, you get the credit.”

“If your theory is right, you’ll get the credit. If it’s wrong, it just looks like I’m grasping at straws.”

“But you believe it or you wouldn’t have asked for it to be done, right?”

“At this point, I’m willing to try anything to solve a case,” he said.

“I’ll take that. You’ll have to let me know how it turns out,” she said.

“I will. Have a good night. I’ll touch base tomorrow, I’m sure.”

They hung up after that. They didn’t talk daily and she didn’t expect it, but they did almost always send a text at some point.

She liked he wasn’t clingy and she felt he appreciated she wasn’t either.

She was proud of herself for noticing what she had on those pictures. Now she just had to figure out what her aunt’s next move might be.

Under His Nose

“I’m looking like a hero right now,” Sawyer said on Friday night.

“Why is that?” she asked, kissing him. He felt horrible he was an hour later than he’d thought he’d be, but he couldn’t walk out of work when he got the test results he’d been waiting for.
