He’d texted Faith to tell her and said they could reschedule for tomorrow, but she said she had no plans and would just hold off starting dinner until he texted he was leaving.

“The toothbrush DNA came back. You’ll be happy to know something.”

“Two different people,” she said. “I already figured it out but needed the proof.”

His smile dropped but then filled his face again when Fred nudged his hand for some more attention.

He’d never been afraid to ask for another’s opinion or help. There had been times in his life things happened right under his nose and he’d be damned if he’d allow it in his career.

That was probably why he spent so much time working after hours or seeing if Faith saw something he didn’t.

He’d been a fool once, he wasn’t going to be again.

“You’re right. Two people. Someone was staying in the house with him. The neighbors never saw another person coming and going through.”

“How closely were they watching?” she asked. “I never notice if there are new people or more than one person at my neighbor’s places.”

“That is you,” he said. “But not everyone is like that. I’ve had some nosy neighbors in the past.”

“I’m sure I do too,” she said. “It’s a relative though, isn’t it?”

“Brothers,” he said. “Twins.”

She did a fist pump. “Score one for the scientist.”

“Yep, you’re going to get the credit on this as soon as I can tell James about you. If you don’t have a problem with it, it might be tomorrow.”

“I don’t care,” she said. “Just don’t tell him I’m related to the Fierces. He doesn’t know them, right? But you said he can’t keep his mouth shut.”

“He can’t, but he will with this. I’ll just say your name is Faith and nothing more and he’ll accept that since I don’t talk much about my personal life as it is.”

She waved her hand. “Tell me the rest. You said he had no siblings.”

“He doesn’t that we can find. So tomorrow we’re going to have to dig deeper and find out. The easiest answer is adoption. One family got one kid and another got the other. Somehow they got connected again, not sure. Once we can figure it all out, we’ll go from there. Good job though giving us another lead to follow.”

She hopped up and did a little butt wiggle that he found adorable. “That was so exciting. Not sure I could do it again, but I’d like to try.”

“If you want to you can. I don’t have a problem with it. All you did was go on a hunch something was off and it was right. I’ve learned to go with my gut more now. It’s not normally wrong.”

Because he wanted to check everything out that he could. Again, not being a fool.

He was almost kicking himself over that too. That he didn’t catch it. The clothing was off compared to what was in the closet. The toothbrushes. They were too quick to write off the guy’s hands as having a hobby and not branching out when they were coming up with loose ends.

“I’m just glad I was able to help you. As I said, I’m so used to looking for things like that. Not quite like that, but man, it was fun. Maybe I should consider being one of those CSI’s in the labs.”

He started to laugh. “I could see you doing that.”

“I like what I do,” she said. “Even who I work with to a point.”

It was the first he was hearing this. “What’s wrong with the people you work with?” he asked.

“Nothing much other than I’ve never been one to fit in. I get along with my coworkers, but they can be a little mean. Too many women in the department. I’d rather work with men.”

He frowned over that but would let it go. He’d heard statements like that from other women in the past.

“I don’t picture you as the type to care if someone is mean to you or not,” he said.

“Not really,” she said. “I think I’ve always been that way. There was part of me that thought working in a lab would be filled with more people like me. There are a few but not a ton.”
