“So nice to meet you too,” Marci said. “Jolene has had such nice things to say about you.”

“She has?” she asked.

“Of course I have,” Aunt Jolene said. “My brother’s daughter is brilliant. She’s a scientist here in the hospital.”

“It sounds like a fascinating job,” Marci said. “I’ve got a grandson that is a detective. Science helps him with a lot of his cases.”

Faith wasn’t supposed to know that Sawyer had said if his grandmother met her he’d consider a date.

“I’ve been known to do some work on criminal cases,” she said.

“Marci has a grandson named Sawyer. The one she spoke of,” Aunt Jolene said. “I know it’s your lunchtime. Can we take you to lunch?”

She was trapped and knew it. Her aunt knew she’d never be mean in front of someone.

“Sure,” she said. “Lunch sounds good.”

She gave her aunt a nasty look though when Marci turned her back and her aunt only laughed at her holding her thumb up in victory. Little snot.

“I’ve been tricked,” she said into the phone forty-five minutes later. “I feel so foolish. I never thought I’d get suckered like this.”

“What happened?” Sawyer asked.

She’d sent him a text saying she needed to talk to him as soon as possible. Then the minute she’d sent that text she wished she could have found a way to retract it.

“I just had lunch with your grandmother and my Aunt Jolene.”

“Aren’t you working?”

“Yes, I am,” she said. “But my aunt—she’s a sneaky one—she came to see me at work. Right when she must have guessed I’d be going to lunch. I’m not sure how she knew it and I’ll be getting to the bottom of it. But she did. And then she got me with your grandmother being there too. She said she brought your grandmother to an appointment.”

“I wonder what is going on or wrong with her? I’ll have to figure out how to find that out.”

“I don’t think it’s anything,” Faith said. “Or maybe there is a specialist in the hospital on how to trap your family.”

He laughed at her. “You’re probably right. So I’m sure I’m going to hear from my grandmother soon that she met you and that I said I’d go on a date with you if she liked you. Do you think she liked you?”

“Of course she liked me,” she snapped. “I’m a likable person.”

He laughed even harder. “Could have fooled me. Are you upset over this?”

She took a deep breath. “No. Your grandmother was a very sweet lady and sang your tunes so much that if I hadn’t already seen you naked so many times, I’d think you had wings on your back and a halo that floated over your head.”

“I am her favorite.”

“Her only,” she said. “I heard that too. How smart and loyal you are. I almost thought you were a dog at one point. I should have asked if you were obedient.”

“Only for you,” he said.

This time she laughed. “Sorry if it sounded urgent. I guess it wound me up and I’m not sure how soon your grandmother will call you.”

There was silence and then he said, “Right now.”

“What?” she asked.

“She’s calling me right now.”

“Go answer it,” she said. “It’s your turn. At least I gave you advance notice of what went down.”
