“Hi, Grandma. What’s up?”Marci heard when she placed the call. It was playing through her car right now as she and Jolene drove home after lunch with Faith.

“Not much,” she said. “I just wanted to let you know I had lunch with Jolene’s niece just now. What a sweet young lady.”

There was silence on the other end. She’d bet her grandson didn’t think she could pull this off.

Marci had to admit she’d been losing hope and was all for Jolene’s plan, even if she felt bad for trapping Faith that way.

And the fact that Faith was such a good sport about it all went a long way with her too. That showed some true character and exactly what her grandson would appreciate.

“How did you manage that?” he asked.

She looked at Jolene and saw her neighbor shrug. “Jolene had an appointment at the hospital today where Faith works. She asked if I could go with her and when we were done, Jolene went to see if Faith was available for lunch.”

“Ahh, so you backed the poor girl into a corner. I’m not sure I’d be so happy about that. What if you like her and want me to go on a date with her and she is going to resent me for what happened? You could have just put me in a bad position out of the gate.”

She hadn’t thought of that and now wondered if she just made matters worse by pushing this and going along with her friend.

“I don’t think so,” Marci said. She looked at Jolene. They were just sitting in the parking lot now with the engine running. Jolene shook her head at her. That was something at least.

“What makes you think that?” he asked.

“Because we were honest. I talked about you the whole time. Faith knows that her aunt has been trying to set her up. She even joked about it. She knows what the lunch was about.”

“And did she give her okay for me to ask her on a date? Because if she didn’t, I’m not doing it.”

Marci got a frantic look in her eye and glanced at Jolene. “She did say she’d be open to it.”

She didn’t remember that, but if Jolene said yes, then that was all that mattered right now.

“Then I guess I’ve got no choice but to suck it up. What’s one date, right? I did say I’d do it.”

“And you’re a man of your word,” she said. “I think you’ll like her, Sawyer. I’ll text you her information soon, but I know you’re busy. Hopefully it doesn’t take you too long to find a time to meet. Even if it’s for coffee. Oh wait, she doesn’t drink coffee.”

“What?” he asked. “Who doesn’t drink coffee? Grandma, you’re off to a bad start.”

She cringed again. “Stop it, Sawyer. Do it for me and then I’ll leave you alone.”

He laughed on the other line. “Fine. Only for you. Bye, Grandma.”

She disconnected the call. “How did I do?”

“You did great,” Jolene said.

“I don’t like the fact that we both lied about having appointments.”

“We didn’t lie,” Jolene said. “We had an appointment at the gift shop in the hospital. I picked up what I ordered. It was in both of our names.”

She rolled her eyes. Jolene sure did know how to cover her bases.

“Good point. I hope Sawyer doesn’t ask me what your appointment was about, but since he knew I was trying to set him up, he’ll probably let it pass for now.”

“Even better,” Jolene said. “Now we just have to wait and see how long it takes Sawyer to reach out to Faith. What do you think?”

“I don’t know,” she said. “I almost feel like I can’t bug him just yet. I’ll give it a week at the very least and then ask.”

“I want to argue you need to stay on him, but you know him best and no reason to get them off on the wrong foot.”
