“That’s right. Do you think Faith would hold it against Sawyer with the way they met?”

“I don’t think so,” Jolene said.

“But you don’t know for sure?” she asked. She wasn’t so sure if she just shot herself in the foot or not.

“Trust me on this. It will work out. I’m never wrong and I won’t be this time.”

“You mean Gavin is never wrong,” she said, grinning. “Didn’t Gavin say he thought of Sawyer and Faith years ago?”

Jolene frowned. “Fine. Yes, Gavin thought of it first. But it’s not like he’s done much to get to this point. You and I got the results today.”

“Good point. May we get some more!”

Lucky Bastard

“Dude. Either you are the luckiest bastard I know, have a magic wand you aren’t sharing or are smarter than I give you credit for.”

Sawyer turned to look at his partner as he’d said those words when they were in his SUV.

“No to the first. I wish on the second. And I’ve always told you how smart I was. But why this time?”

James laughed before he took a huge bite of his donut, then opened the bag in his hand to offer one.

“Take it,” James said.

He grabbed one out, the warm cinnamon sugar almost gooey on his lips. “These are good.”

“I know all the best spots,” James said. “Anyway. The New Year’s Day case. Your hunch on the ring the victim was wearing. It was engraved. Then we went through the list of other people at the party matching the name inside. Come to find out, someone finally talked. She was an ex, the other victim was the supplier to those at the party.”

“Are you bringing the guy in?” he asked. “The ex?”

This went back to him not being afraid to take suggestions and advice from people. It wasn’t beneath him and he never wanted to look like a fool.

“They are trying to locate him. Guess he’s out of town,” James said.

“Or skipped town thinking he got away with something.”

“No one gets away for long. So how did you know? Or think it?”

He wouldn’t lie. On top of that, he should be giving Faith credit. She was the one who noticed the ring and that she’d seen them before as personalized pieces of jewelry. He was not sure why no one noticed that before or even looked enough.

“I had help,” he said. “A magic wand of some kind.”

James laughed. “Asshole. Really? I know you’ve got no life and spend hours looking at evidence at home.”

Not what he wanted to hear and it just made him want to prove his buddy wrong.

“I’ve got a life. And when I said I had help, I did.”

“Are you seeing someone?” James asked, almost choking on his donut. The last bite at this point. But it must have been the look in his eye that James caught on. It worked because now it let him tell his partner he had a girlfriend without sounding like a wuss and having to just announce it.

“Maybe,” he said, grinning.

“You have to give details. We’ve got four hours in the car. Give me something.”

He hadn’t been looking forward to this day but had no choice either. It was his case and they’d found Cole Simpson. The twin brother of Colin Myers. He was pretty sure Cole was the one that ended up dead and Colin was now living as his brother.
