His mother should give a shit about her own parents, but his mother never cared about anyone but herself.

“I saw Sawyer’s SUV here,”Jolene said when she walked into Marci’s back door.

“He was here,” Marci said. “I had him over for dinner. I couldn’t wait any longer to find out, but I was afraid to come out and ask too.”

“Never be afraid to ask,” she said. “That is how you get it done.”

“Sawyer has to be handled differently. When he’s in his own head, he shuts down and keeps a distance. I don’t want him to do that.”

“I know,” she said. “You’ve said that before. Sorry. My kids are used to me badgering them. Just like I’m going to do for you. Did you get anywhere?”

Marci laughed and lowered her voice. “I made a promise so I can’t say anything.”

She started to rub her hands together. “That’s good. I won’t push you for it. But that means there is something to say. I haven’t been bugging Faith either. I ask my sister-in-law for an update on the kids a lot, but she never says much.”

“You see Liam at the Pub,” Marci said.

“I do. But it’s not like my nephew says much to me either.”

Jolene knew she deserved that too for the way she was, but she got results and they all thanked her in the end. Even Devin who gave her a great niece a few weeks ago.

“Well, you’ll have to talk to Faith to get what you want out of her. It’s not going to be from me. Sorry. Once you find out any information from Faith, then we can compare notes.”

“There are notes to compare?” she asked almost jumping in place.

“We’ll see,” Marci said. “But it does look promising. It’s what Sawyer needs right now, so I hope it works out.”

“It will,” she said. “I’m never wrong.” Marci was staring at her. “Fine, Gavin is never wrong.”

Scary As Hell

“Faith, what are you doing here?”

Damn it. She thought she could sneak in and grab dinner and leave. She was coming from work on top of it. It was only her. Sawyer was working late. She was getting soup and a sandwich. She had her meals planned for her lunches this week but hadn’t thought much of dinner tonight as she was going to cook for Sawyer tomorrow for Valentine’s Day.

“I’m getting dinner,” she said to her Aunt Jolene. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m allowed to come into my business and check things out.”

“You are,” she said. “But it’s almost five.”

“That’s right,” her aunt said. “I was dropping the twins back off to Cade. They were under the weather today and Alex didn’t want to send them to daycare and Cade had some things to deal with out of town this morning.”

“Are they okay?” she asked.

“Cameron had a bellyache and Regan had a low-grade fever. Both are fine now. Cade can’t handle the kids if they are puking and Alex knows that. No reason to torture my son more. I like to plan that out better and don’t want the kids to suffer.”

Cade always had a weak stomach. He threw up if you just started to talk about puke. She’d found it funny as a kid.

Sometimes she’d go into details about the blood and cells she was working on to just see if it’d turn him green. He was pretty good with that, but the motion or the sight of puke or bodily fluids normally sent him gagging.

“I’m glad they are feeling better,” Faith said. She turned and saw Liam wave at her to come over. That meant her food was done. She moved away from her aunt to get it at the edge of the kitchen.

“Is she giving you a hard time?” Liam asked.
