I smile to myself, falling deeper and deeper in love with her in every passing moment. I stand up slowly and clean myself and when I’m fully covered with suds I walk to her water stream and she steps aside. We watch each other as I rinse off, her eyes taking in every inch of me as I do the same to her. When I’m done she winks at me and steps out of the shower. She's dripping wet as she tiptoes through the bathroom to the steaming bathtub waiting for us.

“Is there a button for that too?” I ask in astonishment as she pulls me over and makes me step in first.

“Honey, there’s a button for everything in this house.”

When I settle into the steaming water I watch as she climbs in after me and snuggles against my chest. Water sloshes over the edges of the tub but she doesn't seem to care. I lay my head back on the porcelain and close my eyes, sighing in pleasure. The water is so hot, her body so soft. I imagine this is what my afterlife will be. Pure comfort with my mate in my arms. After a few minutes Ruby rolls over and presses her chest to mine, kissing me softly.

“The last time I used this bath I dreamed about you… Have you caught your breath yet?” All I can do is nod as she spreads her legs and mounts me, filling herself with my cock and riding me slowly. “This is so much better than the dream…” she gasps, her eyes heavy with pleasure as she rocks back and forth.

This time isn't about an orgasm I realize, this time is just about being close and connected.

Ruby leans forward, wrapping her arms around my neck, and kisses me, her tongue tangling with mine sweetly. “I love you…” she whispers against my lips.

“I love you too, Ruby.”

Chapter22

Ruby

Descending the stairs in my family home feels so incredibly different now. Chase holds my hand, his thumb rubbing reassuringly even as the bulge in his throat rises and falls when he swallows hard. This morning is nerve wracking for us both; we’re accepted as mates, my father was a monster that’s been killing people, and there’s someone who’s been controlling him all this time, mutating him and making him the monster he was.

So tell me why as we descend the stairs and both packs stand watching us am I only worried about them taking Chase away from me?

Silver Dawn and Dark Moon wolves move around each other, as if magnets in reverse that can’t touch, some sneering and some smiling hopefully. Everyone waits at the closed doors of the main sitting room in complete silence. Jax blocks the door, next to Sniper from Dark Moon. As we approach they step aside, Jax sneering and Sniper leering and elbowing Chase suggestively as we walk past. Chase chuckles and shoves him slightly, but wraps his arm tightly around my waist.

The sitting room is a disaster and as we walk through the doors, I stop and gasp. The seating has been shredded, my father’s portrait has claw marks slashed through it. Cole and Ryder sit across from each other on ruined couches, both silent, as my mother in wolf form prowls around the room growling.

Like us, Cole and Ryder have dressed simply in jeans and a t-shirt, and from what I can tell my mother was wearing her favorite blue silk robe that Daddy had given her. Now it’s in tatters around the room.

“She’s been like this all night,” Cole says, his voice low and weary.

“She just needs time.” Ryder sighs, running his hand through his long hair as he stands. “When my father died, my mother turned to drugs. I’m thankful your mother has more tact than mine.”

Chase stands between the two Alphas as they struggle to understand the new world they’ve now found themselves in. This new world they’re expected to lead. I go to my mother, but she curls her lip at me and lets out a low warning growl. I get as close to her as I can and sit cross legged on the floor, watching her silently as I listen to the Alphas speak.

“If we're going to have this work, the teams should be paired,” Cole starts, and I realize we’ve come in mid-negotiations. “One Silver Dawn, one Dark Moon. Each pack member holds the other in check, each will have a reason to defend any wolf they come upon that needs it.” He glances at Ryder. “I understand you have several female enforcers?”

“Yes, more than half of the pack are female, but don't count them out on that alone. These ladies are feral, wild things. Most of them can take a male on and win on their own merit. There are a few in the pack who have different strengths, such as child rearing or cooking or repairs, everyone has their job and they excel at it,” Ryder says, chest puffing with pride.

“Quite different from Silver Dawn, our women are cared for and protected,” Cole says thoughtfully. “Until now, only the men did the defending.”

“It will be a culture shock for us all,” Ryder agrees. “The biggest shock of all being that the pack’s territory boundaries will cease to exist. All wolves need to be able to travel freely if we’re going to keep this place protected.”

Chase’s phone rings and he steps out of the room quietly. I can feel him move through the house, out the front doors, and when he comes to stand at the window he gives me a small smile. My protector, always.

My mother sees the exchange between us and she whimpers, walking over to me slowly and laying her head in my lap. Tears prick my eyes. Her mind is full of sadness and hatred, she’s trying to understand what happened to Daddy.

I stroke the soft white fur on her head, sending her thoughts of love and the best memories with my father. Slowly, her trembling stops, and she seems more in control of her rage and despair.

“Sorry to interrupt…” Chase says, and all eyes are on him as he returns to the room. “That was the sheriff, a woman came into town a few days ago with a small child. She ate at Bob’s and then left, saying she had a long drive ahead of her, but they found her car nearby with the toddler strapped into their car seat and screaming. There’s no sign of the mother, and it looks like claw marks on the vehicle and ground around it.”

Everyone in the room goes stiff, the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. “Was she…human?” I ask, dreading the answer.

“She is, as is the child. The police have asked me to look into the situation. Sheriff Oswald says they’ve never needed a detective here before, and given our special circumstances he’s hoping I can solve this without involving any higher authority.”

I bite my bottom lip. We’ve only just confirmed our mating for real and now he’s being pulled away.

“If that thing took a human woman before attacking us…” Cole whispers.
