The Broken Horn Tavern disappears behind me but I know I’ll soon be back there again. I only hope Zy never comes back when I pick up a job there. The glow of the street lamps grow fainter as I turn a corner.

The street I’m on is dimly lit, taking away any sense of safety for a girl walking home late at night. I’m eager to get back home so I pick up the pace, staying away from the openings of dark alleyways. There suddenly rushes through the air a strong breeze, startling me.

I yelp as I walk past an alleyway, where from the corner of my eye I spot a group of thugs huddled over a small fire. They turn upon hearing me squeal. I make the mistake of looking at them, seeing they brandish evil smiles stretching from ear to ear. They start winking and whistling.

“Where are you going, pretty lady?” shouts one, rising to his feet.

Fuck, don’t come over, please gods.

The hooligan begins advancing, causing me to break into a sprint. I don’t stop for one moment, not even to look over my shoulder. As I run, I think about Zy coming to my rescue and putting the street thugs in their place.

Come on, stop thinking about him!

I finally come to a stop a few streets over. Looking around, the coast is clear though the street lighting still leaves much to be desired in the way of comfort. I keep a quick pace as I march on the sidewalks, eventually turning the last corner where Mosar’s house comes into view.

Finally, that’s a relief.

I run a hand over my hair, letting out a heavy sigh. I only hope that the healer tells me good news tomorrow, then I’ll finally be one step closer to the freedom I deserve. I crouch down as I sneak up to the side window. All lights inside are off as they usually are this time of the night.

Yawning, I feel exhaustion catching up to me as I take grip of the window. Sliding it up quietly, I carefully throw each leg over, coming into a pitch black kitchen. I’m overcome with ease as I think of bed, anticipating getting some well earned-

“Well, well, well,” announces Mosar, turning on the kitchen light. “What do we have here?”

Shit!

A shrill sense of alarm spreads like wildfire, starting from my heart beating rapidly to my stomach feeling sick as I stand there stuttering over my words.

“Mosar… I, uhm, I was just going out for a walk!”

“Oh, is that so Kyra?”

“Yeah! I just used the window here because I didn’t want to wake you up, sorry for

disturbing you. I’ll just be going to bed.”

I walk to the kitchen’s exit but Mosar throws an arm in my path. Daring to look at his face, there is naught but fury written all over it. Without warning, he slaps me hard, knocking me back. I hit the table with such an impact that it winds the air from my body.

“Don’t treat me like I’m an idiot. We both know full well you’re not allowed out of this house without my prior consent. Did you ask me if you could go for a walk?”

He steps forward, bringing his ugly face closer to mine. The foul stench of his breath makes me want to vomit.

“Did you? Answer me!” he yells, causing me to jump.

“No… I didn’t. I’m sorry.”

“You’re mine, and don’t you ever forget it,” he whispers, running a dirty finger against my cheek.

That’s fucking it.

A burst of adrenaline runs through me. With all my strength, I push him forward, knocking him back. He catches himself on the counter. I immediately regret doing it, seeing the look of fury in his eyes has now become one of vengeance.

“You just made the biggest mistake of your life!”

He rushes forward, punching me hard across the face. I stoop[ over the table, already tasting the blood filling my mouth. A burst of pain ignites across my scalp as Mosar grabs a handful of my hair, lifting me up. He balls his fist and punches my stomach, ripping the air from my lungs. He lets go, causing me to fall to the floor.

My knees buckle beneath me. I’ve no strength to stand, leaving me defenseless as he advances on me. He grabs a thick wooden rod resting against the wall. I peer up to see him raise it high in the air. He looks like a god about to smite a demon.

“Please,” I yell. “Don’t-”
