I walk over and bend down, picking up the fallen laundry and throwing it on top of the basket.

“Thanks,” she says, picking the basket up.

“I’ll take that, you go grab a seat for yourself.”

I reach as she holds the basket out. At that moment, our fingers touch. My eyes immediately rush to meet hers as though they’re magnetic. Although no words are spoken, an intensely powerful look comes within the flicker of her eyes. Her pupils dilate.

We share a look of curiosity as though seeing each other for the first time all over again. A sudden wave of heat comes over me, filling my body with a strange mixture of joy and confusion. Kyra then lets the basket go, silently thanking me before moving to the bed.

I close the door behind her and bring the basket to the bed. Taking a seat beside it, both her and I start picking each other’s clothes out of the pile, folding them neatly.

“So, uhm…” she mutters, brushing her hair behind her ear. “How was your day?” she continues, speaking quickly as if flustered.

“Well…” I groan, running a hand over my head as I try to think. “I had to break up a fight in the streets. At the end of it all, I turn to find a mischievous hooligan sticking his hands right in my pockets. Can you believe it?”

“He tried stealing from a city guard?” chuckles Kyra.

“I didn’t know whether to applaud him for his bravery or shun him for his foolishness. I let him go with a slap on the wrist.”

Kyra laughs and smiles, the glow of her happiness complementing her perfect skin and bright hair. The sight of her smile brings to me a warm feeling. I try to ignore it but it’s just so strong.

“By the way, thanks for getting me new clothes. I’m sure I’ll slip back into my old ones once the baby arrives.”

“Oh please, there’s no need to thank me,” I reply, waving a hand.

“I mean it. I don’t have any money so I really appreciate it. I can pay you back once I sort something out.”

“Don’t worry about it,” I say reassuringly. “Here, this is yours,” I tell her, handing over a small pile of folded clothes.

“Thanks Zy,” she replies.

Our fingers brush against each other again. I swear I hear Kyra giggle underneath her breath.

“Excuse me for a moment,” she says. “I’m just going to put these away.”

She quickly spins around to her bedside drawer, too swift to be mindful of the vase sitting atop it. She accidentally kicks the drawer, causing the vase to wobble unsteadily. Noticing it just in time, I lunge across the bed, reaching my arm out as far as it can go.

The vase falls just as Kyra gasps, extending her arm out too. It slips past her grip, falling right into my palms. We breathe a sigh of relief as I set it back in its place.

“I’m so sorry,” she says.

“It was an accident,” I reply, brushing it off. “Just part of looking out for each other, you know?”

She smiles shyly, turning her face away before continuing with her task at hand. After tidying her things away and tucking the vase further in from the drawer’s edge, she takes a seat beside me.

“I’ll give you a hand with the rest of these.”

“It’s okay, why don’t you go rest?” I ask.

“I’m alright,” she says, laying a hand on mine. Her eyes widen ever so slightly, taking her hand back. “I… I want to help. Besides, you kind of suck at folding clothes, no offense big guy.”

“Oh ho! I do?”

“Yeah, I figure you need me around to show you a trick or two.”

“Perhaps so,” I reply. Internally, I’m savoring the sensation of her skin on mine while hoping I’m not making it obvious. “How did you get on today when I was at work?”

“Good, some days are tougher than others but today wasn’t so bad once I was on my feet. Carrying heavy things is definitely getting harder but I managed to scrub the floors and wash all the dishes.”
