“I noticed,” I reply, gesturing to our surroundings. “Thank you for that. I really appreciate you doing it.”

“Well hey, you’re letting me stay here free of charge.”

“I wouldn’t charge you in the first place. You’re carrying our child. I’ve a sense of duty to fulfill and I wish to provide in whatever way I can. It’s the least I can do.”

Kyra looks at me in surprise.

“You… really mean that?” she asks.

“Of course I do.”

“Thanks Zy. I feel safe here.”

“I’m glad you do,” I reply with a warm smile.

I take my folded laundry and put it away.

“Do you want some tea?” I ask Kyra.

“Could I get a small cup?”

“Sure.”

I pour some water into a pot and leave it over the fire to boil. In the meantime, Kyra has settled into bed, pulling the blanket close to her. She closed her eyes for a brief moment before opening them, a look of worry coming over her face. Tilting my head in thought, I come to her side of the bed and take a seat,

“What is it?” I ask.

“It’s nothing, don’t worry,” she says, feigning a smile.

I notice her running her hands over her belly but there’s no signs of pain on her face, leaving me wondering what the problem could be.

“Is it something to do with the child?” I say, laying a hand on her leg.

She looks at me, seemingly in contemplation as she darts a glance between each of my pupils. The room is ghost quiet save for the sound of simmering water. Kyra relents, letting out a sigh of defeat.

“To be honest… I’m scared. I devised this whole plan to gain my freedom and convinced myself I could look after this child, yet now I’m having doubts. Am I in way over my head Zy? I don’t even know if I can be a good mother, I can barely look after myself as is.”

“Hey…” I mutter, squeezing her leg.

“I always wanted to have a family someday but not like this. My future is still so uncertain. Fuck, I don’t even know if Mosar is aware I’m no longer his property. You did sign the paperwork correctly, didn’t you?” she asks desperately.

“I checked twice, don’t worry about the contract, that’s all done and dealt with. Now listen…” I whisper, taking her hand in mine. “You’re going to be a great mother. You’re only thinking like this now because the child’s going to arrive soon. You didn’t exactly have the best upbringing yourself but that’s why you’re going to make sure this baby gets everything you didn't.”

Kyra nods. The grip of her hands loosens in mine as I feel the tension leaving her body.

“As the father, I’m going to do everything I can to protect you both. You’ll have me by your side every step of the way, that’s a promise.”

“Oh Zy… I’m sorry I roped you into this.”

“The past is the past, Kyra. Right now, you and our child are my priority.”

Our eyes linger on one another for a moment, her gaze melting me. Just then, the water begins over the edge of the pot, spilling into the fire below. Letting go of Kyra’s hand, I rush over to rescue the pot.

I’m frustrated to have been ripped away from the moment we were sharing, knowing it’d be awkward to resume where we left off.I bring her tea and place it beside the vase.

“I’m going to sit by the fire. You get some rest.”

Kyra nods as I turn away. Minutes pass by like seconds as I delve deep into my thoughts, soon hearing her gentle breathing become deeper with sleep.
