“Fuck no,” I growl, grabbing him by the throat. “If you won’t face justice like a man, I’ll just beat it into you!”

I punch him across the face, causing blood to fly from his mouth. It splatters in a thin line across the wall. I then smash his already broken nose into the wall, creating another hole. Pulling him out, I unleash a kick into his chest that sends him across the room.

I go over to him, peering down in disgust as he looks up to me. I stomp on his chest, hearing something crack beneath my boot . Stooping down, I grab his collar and bring him closer.

“You don’t know how lucky you are. This is light work compared to what’ll happen again if you ever come near Kyra. Don’t even dare step foot into the Broken Horn Tavern unless you want a broken neck, do I make myself clear?”

“Yes!” he yells, blood spilling from his mouth.

“Good… Now then…”

I stand up, raise my boot and bring it down on his ankle, breaking it with a loud snap. I turn to leave as he grasps it in pain. Adrenaline continues fueling my body as I make my way back to the woman I love.

KYRA

There rings through my head a constant ringing noise, switching between volumes of just noticeable to annoyingly apparent as I fade in and out of consciousness. I feel as though I tread on the brink of wakefulness but can’t register my immediate surroundings. Familiar voices keep calling out to me but I’m unable to answer.

What’s the last thing I can remember?I ask myself. Closing my eyes, I concentrate as hard as I can, trying to piece together the memories of the night, shattered into pieces like a fallen vase.

I recall working as I usually do at night. There I was, cleaning the tables near the entrance of the tavern when the door swung open. I turned to it, seeing the last person I ever expected to see again. Frozen in place by the shock, I did nothing but gaps when Mosar ambled into the tavern.

The memory suddenly stops as my mind goes blank, seeing nothing but a vast and empty void around me.

Focus Kyra!

It comes back to me. I remember how he stumbled in, his drunkenness apparent from how he smelt and the bottle in his hands. That’s when he saw me, his eyes widening in surprise.

I had always thought Mosar would ignore me, or at the very worst insult me for leaving him if we had ever crossed paths again… But nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.

Something came over Mosar as he sprung forward, charging at me like a wild animal. I had no time to react before he wrapped his hands around my throat. I had not even a second to scream before a glass bottle was smashed over my head.

That’s when everything went black, my world reducing to a blur as I felt the impact of more kicks and punches all over my body, as well as the shrilling screams of Nova. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t recall anything further after that, not that I really want to in any case.

“Kyra?” says another familiar voice. “Kyra, are you awake?”

My vision slowly clears as I look up at the face of Phemes. She holds a warm wet cloth to my bruised and sore arms.

“What… happened?” I ask weakly.

Phemes strokes my forehead as she speaks.

“I’m afraid you were attacked at work my dear,” she says, her voice as loving and calm as it always has been.

“I… remember that but I don’t know how I got here.”

“Zy brought you to me.”

“He did?” I ask in confusion.

How did he know I was… No, that’s right. I must not have returned home in time… Fuck, how long was I out of it for?

“Agh!” I exclaim, jerking my arm.

“Sorry dear, you have quite a few lacerations all along your arms. Try not to move too suddenly, I’ve identified many bruises as well as muscle strains.”

“Right… You were saying Zy brought me here?” I ask.
