“Well, I’m glad,” Stephen replies, his face sweaty and glowing. “It makes me feel that you’re all mine in a way nobody else has been.” And now his eyes are burning into mine with the same intense look that had hooked me in the first time I had seen him.
“So what happens now?” I ask. “What happens with Jonathan? And the whistleblower story.”
Stephen’s face clouds over, and I regret asking such a loaded question after sex. “Of course, we can’t publish the story now, given Jonathan’s involvement in the whole thing. But we can hand it over to another newsroom that will do justice to all your hard work.” He smiles and tucks a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
“And what about your . . . friendship with Jonathan?” I ask tentatively, even though I know that this question will hurt all the more.
“Honestly? I don’t know,” Stephen replies with a sigh. “We have been friends for so long that I just can’t imagine walking away from him forever . . . For starters, I’ll ask him to resign, of course. And then . . . then, we’ll see. But honestly, if he can’t come to accept our relationship, then I don’t think I want a friendship with him after all.” He stares off into the distance, eyes dimming with some secret sorrow that I can’t reach.
“Hey,” I say softly, turning his face towards me. “I’m here for you. And I’m never abandoning you. No matter what happens?”
“Really? No matter what?” A smile slowly breaks out on Stephen’s face, and it feels like a lone ray of sunlight filtering into a previously dark room.
“No matter what,” I repeat, drawing his lips to mine.
And with that kiss, I sealed a promise I intend to keep till my last breath.
