“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I giggle, making my way over to them. “Long time no see, gentleman.”

“Miss Prior,” they say, facing me and bowing their heads slightly.

“Babysitting Chance?” I tease. A few of them chuckle, and they all shake their heads. “Not here for Chance?”

That surprises me. They don’t shy far from him. They have been his hired muscle for years. Some of them for over half of his life.

“Mr. DeLuca here?” I ask, looking at the building.

“No, Mr. DeLuca isn’t here,” Warren replies. I face him.

“Then… why are you guys parked out front?”

None of them answer. They share glances with each other, but none of them speak.

“Wait. Are you babysitting me?” My eyes widen. “Under whose order? Chance’s?”

“Mr. DeLuca himself,” Warren informs me. I damn near choked on my spit. Why in the world would Chance’s dad send his guys to watch me?

“Am I in trouble? Is he mad at me?” Panic floods me. The last person on this planet that I want to piss off is Mr. DeLuca.

My chest tightens. My knees weaken, and I collapse to the ground. The guys rush to my aid.

“Miss Prior, are you okay?” Warren asks, bending down.

“Ashlynn!” I hear Chance call out from somewhere. My head is too foggy to look around.

It’s taking everything in me to keep my eyes open. I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest, and I want to throw up. What did I do to cross Mr. DeLuca? I’ve always been respectful to him. We had good conversations, or so I thought. Does he hate me for making Chance choose? God. What do I do? He isn’t someone I can afford to go up against.

“What did you do to her?” Chance growls, dropping his bag and kneeling in front of me. “Ashlynn, what’s wrong?”

“There’s been a misunderstanding, Boss,” Carlito answers.

“What kind of misunderstanding makes her drop to the damn sidewalk?” Chance snaps. Warren bends down and whispers something in Chance’s ear. Chance chuckles slightly. “I see.”

I see? That’s all he has to say? Andwhat the hell was so funny about any of this?

“Ashylnn, my dad still adores you. The guys have been ordered to protect you,” Chance smiles. “He still considers you a daughter. He’d never harm you. Never.”

What? His dad doesn’t hate me after all? Are the guys actuallymybodyguards?

“Breathe,” he says, rubbing my back. “Just breathe. It’s okay. Let’s get you upstairs.”

He stands with me in his arms.

“Grab her purse and my bag,” he orders. Carlito picks up both. “Follow us upstairs.”

“Chance, I can walk,” I whisper.

“Just give me this peace of mind.” He looks me in the eyes. “Please.”

The look in his eyes makes me feel bad. He looks worried sick.

“Okay,” I nod and lay my head on his shoulder.

He carries me across the street over to the apartment building with the men in tow. Those we approach quickly move out of the way. I feel a bit guilty. They probably think Chance and his men are a bunch of thugs… and they aren’t too far from the truth; however, the DeLuca Family never hurt the innocent.

The doorman opens the door, and we make our way inside. Chance walks over to the elevators. One of the guys pushes the button and we wait in silence. Awkward silence. Something about Chance carrying me and the men escorting us just feels weird. I never did get used to the bodyguards being around twenty-four-seven.
