I flash her an apologetic smile as I slide into the chair across from her.

“Your hair does look fly as hell. Sorry, I’m late.”

Holly smiles, brushing her hand over her coarse finger coils.

“I’ll allow it because four people have complimented me on my hair.”

Laughing, I signal the waiter to bring me a glass of the wine Holly is sipping.

“Do I have some catching up to do?”

Holly purses her lips, tipping her head to the side. “No. You’re wound so tight with work, I’m sure you’ll be a cheap drunk tonight.”

“Artie says you’re not allowed to have café patron shots tonight. Also, he says I’m not supposed to tell you he said that.”

Holly rolls her eyes, shaking her head and picking up her red wine.

“Honestly. I love that man to pieces, but he has no idea how a girl's wine night is supposed to go.”

“Ending with us being poured into a town car.”

“And me passed out fully clothed on your spare bed.”

“Oh, you know I’m down for that scenario. Is Ben with Artie?”

Holly shakes her head. “No. He’s at your parents’ house for the night. Artie is in LA for work. Some NFL transfer.”

“Hence the wine night?”

“You know it, girl. Besides, I feel like weneverget to hang out anymore. We haven’t had a good wine night in forever!”

“You shouldn’t have married my brother. Now you’re too busy always hanging out with him.”

“I never had a choice,” Holly bleats. “He’s like a cute little red-headed gnome with that red beard. I took one look and was smitten.”

“You could have done so much better. Have you met my cousins?”

“The twins? Or Pete?”

“Any of them. Take your pick.”

“Ugh.” Holly wrinkles her nose, pursing her lips and shaking her head. “They’re all so… well-groomed. They screamRampwoodfrom their dark hair to their shiny leather shoes.”

“And Artie doesn’t screamRampwood?”

“God, no. Artie screamstake care of me, and I’ll love you forever.”

“Ah. He’s a pity fuck you decided to marry.”

“Exactly!”

Clinking our wine glasses, we chat about the Family Foundation – where Holly worked before becoming a stay-at-home mom with Ben – and my work.

“I miss hanging out with you,” I sigh, two glasses of wine in. Holly giggles, covering her mouth with a perfectly manicured hand.

“I told you, you’d be a cheap drunk. But I miss this too.” She covers my hand with hers and squeezes, her face lighting up. “I have an idea!”

Eyeing her carefully, I put down my wine. Holly’s ideas are usually either brilliant or terrible. But you never know what you’ll get until it comes out of her mouth.
