“Artie’s away for the whole week. We have a Bootcamp at Dynamo Fitness we go to together. It’s Saturday morning. You should come.”

“Dynamo? That new place?”

“Oh, honey. It’s been open for almost four years. But yes. It’s the place you’re thinking of. Come.”

Saturday morning? I don’t know. That’s prime quiet office weekend working time, and I’m always behind. Everyone is always behind with work. There’s too much of it and not enough of us.

Holly must see the indecision on my face because she pounces.

“You know how I text you about my sexy-as-sin instructor?”

“I’m not being set up with your fitness instructor. Besides, you married my weedy, red-headed brother. I have no confidence in what you find sexy.”

Holly rolls her eyes, laughing and sipping a new glass of wine that appeared while I wasn’t paying attention.

“That’s not what I was hinting at, but you totally need to get laid.”

“I don’t have time to get laid.”

“Whatever. What I was going to say is… our sexy-as-sin Bootcamp instructor is out of town on some extended leave of absence. His replacement has changed things up, and we do boxing now.”

Boxing? My interest is officially piqued.

“Okay.” I shrug, nodding. “I could hit something.”

It might help with my stress levels, get rid of some bottled-up emotions, andI get to pummel a boxing bag.

“Yeah, you could, girl!” Holly cheers. “You have to come. Say yes!”

“Okay. I will.”

Nodding decisively, I drain my wine glass. Holly drains hers as well, turning to the hovering waiter with a grin.

“We’re going to need some café patron shots here, honey. And I will need you to video us doing them so I can send it to my husband.”

“I can do that, ma’am.”

Holly squeals, clapping her hands and digging her phone out of her purse as the waiter disappears to get our drinks.

“You’re asking for trouble.” I shake my head at her with an indulgent smile.

“Oh, hush,” she sniffs. “I know exactly what I’m doing. You better hope your walls are soundproof because, child, you’ll hear some shit tonight.”

Okay. TMI. That’s my brother she’s planning on having phone sex with. I need to get wiped out drunk, so I don’t hear that.

Chapter 3

THELMA

Climbing out of the town car, I grab my gym bag and walk through the reflective glass doors. The gym lobby looks more like a resort than any fitness club I’ve been to.

I know I’m in the right place because the club logo is above the pine-colored wooden reception desk manned by a tanned, ponytailed, fit-looking woman with bright white teeth. Dynamo Fitness Club – white on a navy-blue background with a cartoon barbell loaded with weights, bending slightly under the effort.

“What can I help you with today?” the tanned girl asks, a beaming smile on her face. Her even, white teeth are blindingly bright.

“Uh, I’m here for the ten AM Bootcamp class?”

“Of course! Second floor.” She gestures with an open palm to the staircase beside an elevator bank. I ignore the elevators – I am in a gym, after all – and jog up the stairs. The second floor is huge, with doors going everywhere, but luckily I spot Holly.
