“Don’t worry about it. I love the sound.”
Oh my gosh, this man! I standthere swooning, when he looks down and points.
“Wait a minute.Down on bend and knee, find fortune all around,” he says, repeating the message from the bottle.
I look down, and sure enough, right there at his feet is a perfect indent? Outline? Silhouette? Of our key sits, waiting for us to bring it back home.
Excited, I quickly pull out the key and ruby then hand them to him.
“Are you sure you don’t want the answers?”
“What’s gonna happen?” I ask.
“I honestly have no idea, but you’ve got us this far. What if this is your big moment?”
Taking his hand in mine, I reply, “Our big moment.”
With sappy smiles and heart eyes, we place the key in the frame and then the ruby inside the center of the key.
Nothing happens. Several minutes pass. Nothing.
“Maybe, this wasn’t the spot.”
“It has to be. It fits perfectly.”
“Then we should do something more to jump start it.”
“It’s a car now, Cherub?” he teases.
“I don’t know,” I say, shaking my head in frustration and deciding to sit down, so tired from the busy day. The sun is starting to set, and my stomach twists in hunger. Part of me just wants to call it a day.
Sitting beside me, Milo takes my hand in his.
Without anything further, the ground begins to shake, and I yelp in fear.
“Earthquake,” Milo yells. My ears ringing, I crawl to his protective arms where he holds me through the shakes.
It doesn’t last long, and minutes later, I’m opening my clenched eyes.
“Are you okay?” I ask.
“Fine. You?”
Nodding, we take in our surroundings. The earthquake shook the area so hard the old ruins of the walls crumbled down.
“No,” I say in despair. Standing, we both survey the area.
“Watch your step,” he tells me.
The altar has become a platform, the ground around it lying in rubble.
“Oh my gosh,” Milo says. He jumped down and stares at whatever is under my feet.
“What is it?” I ask, too afraid to jump from this high.
With a wide smile, he says, “Your fortune, my Cherub.”
