Geero blinked. “I am a father?”

Amadine nodded. “Yup. You gave a sample to the BDC, and they offered it to me. For a price. I arranged the first date, and you were fun and smart. So, I paid the price to try you out, and your little swimmers stuck to Ondine’s egg like anchors, and the very cute baby girl started to grow. So, then I went for another date, and you continued to be fun and helpful. So, eight months later, it was time for you and Onny to meet.”

Geero was stiff. “I am a father?”

Ondine nodded, pushed him back a step, and hopped off the counter. She pulled her suit back into place and beckoned to him. “Come on.”

She hauled him to the canister. “I haven’t named her, but here she is. She was a surprise from Amadine.”

He stared. “She’s beautiful. She’s mine?”

“If Amadine says so. She is not good at subterfuge, but everyone believes her because she has an honest face.”

He was crouching and caressing the canister in wonder. “I never thought to have a little girl.”

“I hope she doesn’t get your hairy legs. That is a weekend lost to shaving.”

He smiled but kept his gaze on the baby. “She has my hair.”

The thick white fluff on the top of her head moved when the baby stretched in her confined space.

“It is explained now. I didn’t really wonder where it came from.” She reached out and stroked his hair. “Pretty. I wonder if she has your eyes.”

He turned his head toward her, and she pulled her hand back. “Sorry.”

Geero stood and smiled. “We are going to be parents.”

She looked at him and blinked. “I hadn’t thought of it as a cooperative situation.”

“We will work it out. You are going to stay with friends?”

“Yeah. We will be safe with Yalida and her kids.”

“Kids?”

“She runs a foster home for some Uraddan teens. They are nearly done with high school, so she’s saving up for college for seven kids. We will pay rent.”

Amadine cruised by the doorway. “First week is free.”

Geero looked at Ondine. “Why does she do that?”

“Her body is grown, but she’s emotionally a teen.”

Understanding lit his eyes. “And she’s in that matchmaking phase, thinking about family and what she wants.”

Ondine sighed. “She’s relentless.”

Geero blinked. “You have been raising a teen just like you.”

She raised her voice. “Yeah. I must have been really obnoxious.”

Amadine cackled and brought them their hot chocolate. “You forgot this.”

Ondine took her mug. “Thank you, Amy.”

Geero chuckled. “Thank you.”

She took a sip and paused. “Amy, what did you put in here?”
