He kissed her again, and they walked out of the study and closed the door. “Why did you pick this place?”

They opened the door to raucous laughter, Amadine whispering with other girls, and two of the boys in flight combat. Yalida and the remaining boy were working on a barbeque.

They walked toward Yalida. “Where can we help?”

Yalida smiled. “This is awelcome to the neighbourhoodgrill.”

“That is a lot of meat.”

The young male Peret said, “The neighbours are coming. Misker, Syrn, Hera, and the twins.”

“Oh. Right. Should we go elsewhere for the night?”

Yalida smiled. “No, Onny. This is a safe place, and don’t worry about the Sethir-Nin. He isn’t after you. And you have met Syrn, right? He’s good. No worries. Nice and secure.”

“Right. Okay. So, what can I do for dinner?”

Yalida grinned. “Dessert. A trifle is good for this many people.”

“Right, but only put sprinkles on the one side so there are sprinkle-free scoops.”

Yalida nodded. “You’ve got it. I will talk to you later. Does Geero need a job?”

“I am her assistant pastry chef.” He inclined his head.

Yalida paused and nodded. “In that case, proceed.”

Ondine nodded and headed inside with Geero at her heels. She pulled out equipment and ingredients. Geero grinned. “What do you need me to do?”

“Make sure the fruit is raspberry-sized, soak them in simple syrup, and the cake will be in the oven by then.”

She set the mixer to a slow speed and started to add butter.

“You have done this before.”

She grinned at him. “Once or twice.”

“Then, let’s get it done.”

She nodded, and they got to work.

Two hours later, they brought their creation out and set it on the table. It turned out that Geero could chill things if he wanted. When it came to her, he just heated her up.

Lida looked at her and laughed. “Hera and her boys are on the way. Heks also said she was going to try and stop by. The kids are so excited by all their favourites showing up the same day.”

“Heks? She’s in town?” Ondine was surprised.

“Yeah, Clavia just let me know she popped into the coffee shop, so she was invited to dinner.”

Ondine smiled. “It has been a while since I have spoken to her. Do you think she will sing?”

Lida raised her voice. “Heks might play if we can find that darned guitar.”

There was a scramble of teens toward the house, and Lida smiled. “They are going to turn that place upside down. Too bad the guitar is in the barn.”

A puff of air and the sound of running feet had Lida giggling, which was a rare sound.

Ondine asked, “Sonara?”
