“Now. Two of the places are in this neighbourhood. The other three are about twenty minutes away.”

“So, should we get going?”

He wrapped his hands around her waist and lifted her. “We can be a few minutes late.”

She grinned and wrapped her arms around his neck. Being late wasn’t the end of the world.

Chapter Nine

Enkari Mathers had a professional expression when they got out of Geero’s car. They were two properties down from Yalida’s. Apparently, having Uraddan teens in the area was bad for property values.

Enkari looked at her and the protective hand Geero had at her back. She greeted them by name, and Geero gave her a hug.

“So, Ms. uh... Ondine?”

“We are still figuring out a last name that will suit all of us permanently.”

“Well, the area has been in flux, so there are plenty of good bargains that are suddenly on the market. I understand that actives require a bit more square footage than the average citizen. Now, will you pay up front or go with financing?”

“Pay up front.”

“Excellent. Clients enjoy a nice cash offer.”

“Cool. Can I see the house?”

“Oh, of course. This was a farm until the owners wanted to upgrade and moved out, and it has remained in this state since then.”

“Ah, I thought it would be because Uraddans moved into the neighbourhood.”

“It’s a group home. Those tend to affect property values,” Enkari warned.

She looked at the woman with a smile. “You know Yalida? The one you chatted with?”

“Yes. She’s an agent.”

“Yes, she is, and a barista. She is also Uraddan and runs that foster home with her friend Clavia.” Ondine smiled. “I would have no problem with them.”

“Oh, excellent. Well, this way. Are you planning on having kids?” Enkari smiled politely.

“Uh...”

Geero nodded. “Yes. Yes, she is.”

“Great. Well, with a little elbow grease, this place can transform from neglected into a structure you can be proud of. Geero is good at home renovations.” The last was said with a sly tone.

“I don’t doubt he has talented hands. Wait. I didn’t mean to say that.” She looked past them and to the house. She could see what needed to be done, but she was going to have to stop blushing to focus.

Geero snickered.

Enkari cleared her throat. “Right, well, this way.”

They went through the old farmhouse where years of dust had settled. Ondine ran her hand on the butcher block kitchen island and smiled.

“Oh, do you bake?”

Ondine nodded. “I do. I am good at desserts. Anything else I leave to those who have more talent.”

Enkari smiled, and Ondine continued further into the house.
