He nodded, tightening his grip on me. “Is it true you’re pregnant?” he asked after a moment.

I nodded again. “I just found out today.”

He shifted his weight and brought me atop him fully. I swung a leg over him and straddled his hips. “I’m sorry that I never had the chance to teach you not to fear guns,” he told me. He withdrew one from his ankle holster, and though I expected to be terrified after what had just happened, I didn’t even flinch as I stared at it. “Take it.”

I shook my head. “Viktor, I can’t.”

“Take it,” he demanded again, his voice leaving no room for question. I gaped at the demand but reached forward and delicately held it between my hands. “You’re going to hold that gun while I check every inch of you and make sure that you’re okay. It’s ready to use. Nobody can hurt you when you’re holding it. Even me.”

I shook my head as he flipped our positions, leaving me sitting on the cool floor and looking up at him as he examined every inch of my body. “I feel safe with you,” I told him.

“Solishko, youaresafe with me. But after I check your body, I’m going to do more to it.” I gasped at the heat in his eyes, and all traces of the pounding headache disappeared at the thought of what he planned to do. “And I want you to hold the gun while I do it.”

“I don’t need to,” I told him, eyeing it hesitantly. I didn’t like touching it, but having him this close distracted me just enough that I could cope with the feeling of it in my hand.

“I don’t care what you think you need. Do what I’m asking of you. You’re going to learn that in your hand, this gun is safe and able to protect you better than anything else. And when I teach you to use it, you’ll be lethal. You’ll be more powerful than you already are, and you’llneverbe put in this situation again.”

I held onto it as he pulled each item of clothing off my body slowly, examining parts of me that didn’t need to be examined. I gasped as his calloused palms moved up my abdomen and down my hips. He focused on my stomach for an extra long moment, and I knew what he was thinking. But he didn’t say anything as he pulled my pants from my legs and left scorching kisses up my thighs and then down my calves.

“I should have never let something like this happen,” he said.

I froze, staring at him. “You didn’t,” I said, shaking my head. “You had no idea.”

“I didn’t follow through with my promise to keep you safe, but I assure you, it will all be taken care of from here on out.”

His hand roamed to my hips as he lingered atop me, staring down into my eyes with his blazing expression. Viktor looked like he was on the verge of losing control. Maybe it was the fear that still ate at him from believing I’d be killed, or maybe it was the adrenaline of what had just happened. Regardless of what caused to spur of uncontrollable need, his lips slammed onto mine, and it healed something within me in an instant.

Viktor would always be here.

He’d proven it time and time again, and I sank into him as he wrapped an arm around my waist and drew me into him.

“You’re here,” he muttered. “Safe.”

“I’m safe,” I told him, as much a reminder to him as myself as my fist remained closed around the gun. Holding it felt odd as he came down atop me and devoured me wholly, but I followed his demand and did just that. With him so close, I almost didn’t mind having it so close. I didn’t mind anything as long as he touched me with the fervor he used in that moment.

He moved a hand between my thighs, stroking me as his tongue darted out across my lips, claiming me in an erotic way. I ground my hips into his hand and shook my head. “We can’t do this here,” I told him. “They can hear everything downstairs.”

“Let them.”

I barked a laugh, but he seemed entirely serious as he plunged a finger into me and drew a long moan from my lips. His other hand cradled my head as his body kept the chill air from enveloping my bare skin. “Viktor,” I moaned.

“Louder, Solnishko,” he growled. “I want them to hear that you’re mine and that you’ll only ever be mine.”

The thought of him claiming me right here, despite what happened, was unfathomable, but I couldn’t hold back the long cries that left my lips at his coaxing.

It didn’t take long before he reached into his own pants and withdrew himself, plunging it into me and giving me the fill that I’d been craving. I didn’t hold back from clawing at his back with one hand. Everything became startlingly clear as he claimed me, and it didn’t matter who heard. Nothing mattered but the moment between me and Viktor, and I knew that’s how it would be for the rest of our lives together.

He and I against the world.

We fell apart together, and when I met his uncontrollable eyes full of venom and rage, I saw a small spark of gentle care reserved only for me.

“You’re mine,” he said as he pulled out of me. “And that’s about to become widely known. I’m done pulling my punches.”

He helped me get dressed, and I wondered the entire time what he meant about pulling his punches. From what I’d seen, Viktor used brutality liberally to ensure my safety, and I didn’t want to consider how he’d stop pulling punches. Then again, I didn’t particularly care if it came to the people who wanted me dead.

“Is Sean, okay?” I finally asked, handing the gun back to Viktor. He took it and gave me a prideful look that told me I’d done the right thing.

“The housekeeper is there, and the guards on shift know to be extra alert tonight because of all this shit.”
