“Thank you.”

“Shar, I have every faith that Xavier will work this out. I mean, my brother’s the best criminal defence lawyer in the city. If he can’t get the charges dropped, then no one can.”

“I know. I’ve got to go, but I’ll see you at my place later.”

“I’ll be there,” I tell her.

I walk back out to the kitchen and start up the coffee machine. My brain is whirling with all the ways I could possibly help my brother. None of them legal and all of them requiring bail money. I need to do something, anything. I need to get him out of this. I pick up my phone and call Dominic’s number.

“Lucy, where are you? What’s wrong?” he asks. He sounds out of breath.

“Where are you? What are you doing?” I fire back, curious as to why.

“I’m at my place, working out. I can hear the sound of doors opening and shutting. Why are you pacing around your kitchen? What’s wrong?”

I glance up at the ceiling. “You need to get rid of these cameras, wherever they are. It’s a bit much.”

“Answer the question, Lucy. What happened?”

“Have you seen the news?” I ask.

“No, why?”

“My brother’s being charged with the sexual harassment of an employee,” I tell him.

“Okay,” he says it like I just told him the weather forecast.

“He’s innocent. He didn’t do this, Dom.”

“I’m sure he is. But why are you upset?”

“What do you meanwhy am I upset? He’s my brother. He’s hurting, and I want to fix it.”

“Lucy, your brother is a criminal defence attorney. I’m sure he’s more than capable of helping himself… if he’s innocent.”

“Heisinnocent. You know what? Forget I called. I don’t even know why I bothered.” I don’t wait for a reply, ending the call before slamming the phone down on the benchtop.

TWENTY-NINE

Fuck! She fucking hung up on me.

I dial her number right back and watch the monitors as she turns her phone off and flips the bird at the ceiling. She’s pissed. I don’t know what the hell I did wrong. I mean, I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. Her brother will get himself off these charges. There really isn’t anything Lucy can do to help him.

I’m staring at the screen. At her. I’m so out of my element. What am I meant to do? What do I say? WhatcanI say?

I’m just going to have to go over there and make her fucking talk to me if she won’t answer my calls. So I take a quick shower and then head for the garage. The little ping on Lucy’s car tracker notifies me that she’s driving somewhere. Connecting her GPS to mine, I follow her lead. Her little dot stops outside a Rolls Royce dealership. Is she buying a car?

I get there just as she’s walking out again. “Little Bee, I’ve been looking for you,” I tell her.

She jumps at the sound of my voice. “Jesus, Dominic, don’t creep up on me like that. And, really? I’m sure it was really hard to find me.” She rolls her eyes.

“Did you buy a car?” I ask her.

“No, I bought you a replacement car.” She smirks. “Although the wait time is going to be around twelve months.”

“Why would I need a replacement car?” I ask her.

Lucy smiles sweetly. I stare at her lips, wanting to capture them in mine. “Because, when you piss me off, the first thing I want to do is take a baseball bat to that bloody car of yours.”
