“They are.”

“Why did you leave?”

“A job.”

Bria rocks her head back and forth. “I’m never leaving home.”

Wait until you’re a teenager and your father never allows you to date.

Because Kai seems like the type. I’d bet money on it that when his girls get to that age, he’s going to be losing his entire shit.

“I think that’s good,” I say with a lift of my lips. “You get free food and you can keep your daddy company.”

“Mommy says he’s lonely.”

I immediately lose the lift of my lips. That brings a whole round of questions to my brain that don’t need to be there.

Like how many times does their mother mention him or feel about him?

Though, I’m not sure why she’s mentioned it. Kai seems to have alluded to the fact that their relationship ended on a bad note and I was there with him.

I don’t believe he’s the kind of guy who would mention me again even if we were a thing, but I’m not going to delve into that dynamic.

It seems too messy, too much drama, and I’m not going to drown myself in what makes Kai the way he is and why.

Speaking of the devil, the sliding door to the kitchen opens, and in strides the tattooed god himself.

I don’t turn to look at him. He wants me to focus on the girls and not him and that’s completely fine with me. The less I have to deal with his moody bullshit, the more I’m going to be able to function and be in this position.

“Daddy!” Lark exclaims excitedly. “I’m eating Lucky Charms!”

A deep chuckle rumbles from my left and I hate myself for immediately thinking how sexy that just sounded.

“I see that,” I hear him say toward the coffee maker. “Make sure you eat more than just the marshmallows this time.”

“But that’s all that’s good,” she retorts, glancing down at her bowl where she’s already smashed most of the sugary pieces.

“You need to eat it all at the same time,” he says patiently. “That’s the trick.”

“I don’t do magic, Daddy.”

I bring my hand up to my face and hide my smile before I see him amble closer to the dining room table.

Again, I’m not stealing a glance at him because God knows what I’m going to be faced with when I do.

And I’m not looking to start my morning off like that.

Especially the first one with his girls.

“You all getting along with Molly?”

What are they going to do? Tell him no?

“No,” Bria says then, surprising the absolute crap out of me. “She doesn’t have a Barbie house.”

I roll my eyes—can’t help it—because I didn’t know that was a requirement to win her over.

In fact, it’s something Kai could have told me but failed to do so, along with answering any of the other questions I asked him last night.
