However, after speaking with my bestie, Fiona, all became well in the world and I continued to forge through his attitude problem and do what I said I was going to do.

Watch his children and become a support system.

“What’s yours?” I ask, folding my fingers along the top of the dining room table as both girls sit across from me.

Their beautiful blonde hair is long and curly, and they have stunning blue eyes like Kai’s. Both girls seem to love the color pink because that’s what they’re littered in—bracelets, beaded necklaces, and hair clips—but, my god, they are the cutest things to ever walk the earth.

“Bubblegum.”

Pink.

I smile. “I haven’t had that in a while.”

“I want some,” Lark replies, using her cute little eyeballs to sway me. She’s five and naturally follows her sister’s lead with the questioning.

“Maybe we can grab some when they open.”

Bria straightens her spine as if in an interview. I actually would’ve preferred this one over Kai’s. “Do you play Barbies?”

She squints her eyes at me as if that’s a dealbreaker, but she’s not going to find one with that subject.

“I do.”

“I have a Barbie house!” Lark exclaims excitedly. “Daddy bought it for me.”

“Wow,” I muse. “That’s lovely. Can I see it after breakfast?”

The question prompts Lark to remember that she has a full bowl of cereal in front of her and she promptly picks up her spoon and begins eating.

Bria, however, latches on like her father does. “Do you have one?”

I chuckle because, if I did, I might have even fewer dates than I do now. “Unfortunately, no. Not anymore. But I did.”

“Why not?”

“Because I moved out of my parents’ house and didn’t have room.”

“You didn’t go back for it?” Her tiny brows clench as if I committed some mortal sin against the Barbie industry and they should sign her up as their little spokesperson.

“I didn’t,” I claim. “I moved to California and the drive was too long and far.”

Bria frowns. “Oh.” She bites down on her lower lip as if thinking longingly about that fact. “Where are you from?”

“Washington.”

“Where’s that?”

“Two states north of here.”

She lifts her hand and points toward the bottom of her palm. “Right here?”

“No.” I shake my head. “North is up. That’s south.”

“I’ve never heard of it.”

“You will. I’ll show you on a map.”

Bria pushes her lips together and I realize that she’s a thinker. “Are your parents there?”
