Kai, thankfully, hasn’t been home all day so I’ve been able to start on some small freelance projects that I’ve been hired for to pull in some extra money. Anything right now to get ahead, because I’m not sure how long I’ll last here when Kai and I can’t seem to find a rhythm in the house that allows us to be in the same room together.

Opening up my email to take a break, I find a new one from Blue Bird Blog and open it, reading the contents.

Dear Miss Ryland,

We hope this message finds you and your family well. We’re reaching out because we’ve read your work with In The Crowd and are interested in knowing if you’d like to write a few pieces for us. The articles would be based on current-day issues, body image for women, and some odds and ends that we need to be picked up.

If you’re interested, please reach out to us. We’d love to hear back from you.

Sincerely,

Aprille Martinez

My immediate answer is no.

I apparently have trust issues with people who promise me one thing and counter it in another. I don’t want to waste my time or put my creativity into something that’s not going to see the light of day, or that’ll be critiqued so much that it’s not my own anymore.

It’s honestly not even worth the effort at this point unless it’s going to be something that’s full-time and with potential.

Plucking my cell phone from the couch that I’m sitting on in the front room, I pull up my text message thread with Fiona—I need an outside source that actually likes me.

ME: Hi.

FIONA: Hi, butthead. Where have you been?

ME: Winning over little girls.

FIONA: LOL. That sounds awful.

ME: You should see the oldest. I’m scared that she’s not going to make any friends with the way she interrogates everyone.

FIONA: Sounds like she took after her dad.

ME: If you only knew…

FIONA: I’m taking it that you haven’t broken him in yet. Again.

ME: God, no.

ME: That man literally fucked my brains out three months ago and now he hates my guts.

FIONA: It’s a front.

ME: It’s a really good front.

FIONA: He’s closed off so he has to protect his interests.

ME: He could do it with less attitude.

FIONA: Just fuck it out of him.

ME: Fiona…

ME: My job…

FIONA: You might get a pay raise.

ME: LOL.
