Nita paused, her finger hovering over Kensley’s phone number.

“Ryder? Buy the warehouse?” she murmured. She knew how much he’d gotten paid for Mags’s engagement, but it didn’t come close to buying a property like that. “Do you have any idea how much Luke got paid?”

“I didn’t ask, but then I really didn’t care. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a joke,” Diesel said. “Is your guy Ryder rich like that?”

“I don’t know,” she said. But it wasn’t impossible.

“Anyway, Luke gave me the address of a lawyer we’re supposed to see to sign papers. I called, and they can get us in tomorrow night. The guy also said maybe we should set up a holding company, and that the deed should be in the company’s name, because—”

Diesel went on and on about the advice she’d gotten while Nita’s head pounded.

She partially wanted to hear Luke confirm it wasn’t a joke, but that meant she’d have to listen to that asshole’s voice.

No, she needed to talk to Kensley. If her old boss hadn’t done it, then—

“Hey, can you drop me off downtown? I want to tell Kensley about the test and… maybe get her advice on this company thing you’re talking about,” Nita said.

“Oh, good idea!” Diesel agreed, weaving through the afternoon traffic to get onto the interstate. “I’m getting unhappy vibes from you. What’s wrong?”

“It just seems too perfect. Like it’s a trick,” she said.

“It seems too good to be true, but people can surprise you. Maybe Luke is secretly gifting this to us because he feels like a piece of shit for how he’s treated you, the team, women in general… Maybe he’s grown.”

Nita’s lips tightened, her exhaustion intensifying the skepticism within her. “If I wasn’t so tired, I’d laugh you out of this fucking car.”

Diesel shrugged, checking her side mirror and getting them into the HOV lane.

“It’s after five. Will Kensley still be there?” Diesel asked.

“She practically lives at the office. Yes, she’ll be there.”

With a nod of agreement, Diesel stomped on the accelerator and headed the little car toward Seattle.

Nita stepped into law office, passing the dark boardroom and heading to Kensley’s office.

Everything had crashed down on Nita during the ride back. She hadn’t told Diesel about the stress of the exam, or the feeling that answering every question was like taking another step further away from Ryder.

Which was stupid! She’d already walked away from him, and he from her. So why did she have the impulse to fail her test and call him?

Kensley looked up from her desk, a smile lighting up her face. “Hey! How did it go? Tell me everything. Which questions stumped you, if any? Did you have enough time?”

Kensley’s excitement pulled a smile out of Nita. Her old boss jumped up and rounded the desk, pulling her into a hug with her round belly hard against her.

“I survived,” she replied, dropping her shoulder bag beside the desk.

Kensley perched on a corner as Nita sank into a leather chair.

“Tell me all about it. Did it feel hard, or did you breeze through the whole thing with time to spare?” Kensley asked, her face eager.

“It wasn’t all that different from the thousand practice tests I took,” she said, staring at Kensley as she rested her hands on the baby bump.

You might get pregnant, floated Ryder’s voice in her mind.

Ryder, who was on his way to Chicago. Who’d ruined her fucking life by making her fall in love with him.

She looked up in Kensley’s face, the vision of her sweet murmuring with Ellis coming back to haunt her.
