He dug around behind my seat.

“What are you looking for?”

“My bag of treats.”

“From this morning’s convenience grab and go?”

“You make it sound like we stole things.” He winked. “But yes, that bag.”

“Oh, you finished everything off a while ago, and I’d tossed the bag of garbage at the rest stop back at Roger’s Pass.”

“Dang, I’m hungry. I need a snack.”

I had nothing to offer. My banana and lone chocolate bar were long gone too. “Are you always hungry? Or is this just a road trip thing?”

“I snack a lot on road trips. It’s all part of the experience.” Holden one handed the steering wheel. “Want to play a game?”

“You love games too, don’t you?”

A sly, mischievous grin stretched from ear to ear. “Who doesn’t? You don’t?”

“No, I do. I’ve just never played games on the road.”

“That’s because you’ve never travelled with me.”

I heartily laughed because it was totally true. “Sure, what’s the game.”

“It’s a form of the license plate game, except, instead of seeing how many different provinces or states we see, we’ll take the first three letters on the plate and make a reverse acronym.”

“I don’t follow.” I twisted in my seat to get a better look at him.

“Like the car ahead, the first three letters are AJG, so you could sayalways jog graciously.”

An unexpected laugh burst out of me imagining that. “No one jogs graciously, but it’s funny. I like it.”

“What do you mean? I jog graciously.”

My eyebrow went so high it likely joined my hair line. “Let me guess. Your Apple watch monitors your steps and speed, sending data to you through your ear pods, all the while your breathing is evenly paced with controlled inhales and exhales. Your arms pump just so, and you’re light enough on your feet to resemble a gazelle.”

Holden didn’t speak; however, I didn’t miss the upward twist of his lips.

“Am I right?”

“Not about the gazelle part.”

I couldn’t hold back my smile.

Okay, your turn, Miss Smartypants.”

“Hmm…” I rubbed my chin. I wasn’t good thinking on my feet. “Another jet goof.”

“Not bad.”

“It sucks.” But another thought jumped into my head. “Abrasive jewelry maker.”

“Not a good slogan for their company.” But there was a twinkle in his eye, and I was thrilled to see it.

We went back and forth on a few, as we weren’t passing anyone, and no one was passing us. Finally, a fresh vehicle pulled in front.
