A smile tugged at my lips as I replied. This was so fucking weird—I’d never smiled much before Cole came around. Never really had a reason to, I guessed.

Me:

I’m officially a poor student

Cole:

Poor?!!! The bank of dad is funding your student life

Yeah, he was. For as long as I toed the line. And I would because I was tired of being a fuck-up, and I was lucky to have even been given a place on this course.

But that wasn’t even the real reason. I wantedColeto have a reason to be proud of me, to see those soft brown eyes light up the way they had when he’d seen me play with the 2Bit Princes for the first time.

His eyes were so expressive. When he looked at me, it felt like he could see into my soul. Like he could see the real me behind the superficial mask that everyone else saw. And he let me see him too. The way he’d looked up at me last weekend, lying in that field, his gaze so full of emotion that he hadn’t even tried to hide… I hadn’t been able to get that look out of my head ever since.

At first, avoiding him had been easier than I’d thought. Physically. I’d just reverted to my hermit ways, either shutting myself in my room with my guitar or hanging out with the band. Getting him out of my head had been a different question. My right hand had been getting a constant workout, thinking about him fucking me so good, and the worst thing of all? I hadn’t even had a chance to touch his dick. Now I never would.

And why did he have to be so fucking sweet? I preferred it when he was just my unwanted asshole stepbrother, not the guy who’d looked out for me and taken care of me ever since the car accident. He’d hooked me up with the band, he’d seen how fucked up I was over driving again for the first time since the collision, and he’d somehow managed to penetrate the hard shell I kept around me. He’d given me exactly what I hadn’t even known I needed, every step of the way.

With a defeated sigh, I gave in to the impulse to text back words that I shouldn’t be saying to him.

Me:

What are you doing later? Want to meet after work? I’ll be on campus until 6ish

Cole:

I’m going straight from the office to the club. Got called in for a shift to cover sick leave

My heart shouldn’t have sunk at his words, but it did.

Me:

OK

Cole:

You can come and keep me company if you’re not busy? Widen your musical taste with some pop *tongue out emoji*

Me:

You want my ears to bleed again? You’re the one who needs to expand your musical taste

Cole:

Yeah I know. That reminds me. Send me your set list. I wanna learn all the songs you guys play so I can be your first official groupie

My stomach fucking flipped. He wanted to learn our songs?

Me:

OK. I’ll bring it to the club tonight. If my ears bleed you owe me

Cole:

Drinks on the house. I’ll make you your signature cocktail. When you’ve had a few you’ll be singing along with Britney again. Or was it Kylie?

I sent him a row of middle finger emojis, to which he sent back the word “haha” repeated over and over a million times.Dickhead.
