“Good plan. When I get home I’ll move stuff around. Walter might kill me if I’m late, though.” She winced as she glanced at the clock. “Be safe.”

“You, too,” I said. She blew us a kiss and rushed out of the door. “Do you want something to eat?”

“Sure?” he questioned more than said.

“I’m feeling a breakfast sandwich. Sound good?” He nodded and I busied myself pulling out the ingredients. Soon, the bacon and eggs were sizzling and I was toasting our bread.

“You have family?” I asked absently. We were still strangers and I wanted to fix that. Even if it meant playing twenty questions.

“I do. My parents live a few states away so unfortunately, I only see them around big holidays. We talk all the time, though,” he admitted. “Mom’s gonna panic if I don’t call back soon. I’ve been avoiding her.”

“Micah is my family now. That’s Ellie’s brother, we’ve been friends since college. I’ve got the pack now, that’s about it,” I explained as I compiled the sandwiches and passed one over. The conversation lulled as we ate and willed our coffee to wake us up. When we finished, I tossed the plates in the sink and turned to my new mate.

“Let’s go grab your things now,” I said.

“Don’t you have to work as well?” he asked.

“Nothing that can’t wait,” I said. “How are you with construction and renovation projects?”

“The old pack owned a construction firm,” he offered, confused by the turn of events.

“Great, then we have one more stop before coming home,” I explained. Bear didn’t question it as he waited for me to put on my shoes and grab my things. He was forced to wear last night’s clothes but at least we were heading for his room at the local motel.

By the time we pulled up to the motel, some of my anger had simmered down. We were quiet still but at least the awkwardness had faded.

“It won’t take me long,” he admitted. “I’ve kept it fairly clean in case I needed to leave quickly.”

“I hate that you’ve been living in fear,” I said, reaching for his hand and giving it a squeeze. “It’ll be over the moment they step in town. You’re our pack now, not theirs, and neither is Ellie.”

“They deserve each other,” he said bitterly as he pulled out a fresh outfit. “You mind if I take a quick shower, I won’t be long.”

“Go for it,” I told him, settling in the chair and waiting. He closed the door behind him and I breathed in the scent he left behind. It was a sweet vanilla mint that was calming… though it was dulled by his worry.

That would change. The moment that pack was brave enough to show their faces it would be over.

His phone was resting on the bed, discarded before his shower. When it started going off, I picked it up. If he had an issue with it I’d apologize later.

Trevor: Guess what, baby boy. We’re only an hour away from leaving. Can’t wait to wrap my arms around you.

Jacob: It’s been lonely without you.

There was a pause where they saw it left on read. My fingers twitched, ready to reply, but that would be crossing a different line.

Trevor: I see you’re still being a big fucking baby

Jacob: It’ll change when he sees us. You can’t resist us, you never could

Trevor: You’ll fall on your knees for your alpha again. Though it’s not just about you, we’ll get Ellie back.

Jacob: Then our pack will be perfect. Morgan is going to step back for a bit until we’re ready for her

Trevor: You’ll have to learn to get along with her. You belong to us.

Notwithus.Tous. They were bold in their assumptions.

I sat the phone on the table, open to the messages, and pulled out my own. Our group chat included Bear, so he’d see our messages, too, but we didn’t have anything to hide like they did.

Collin: The Forrest Pack is a few hours out. Ellie, don’t leave work until you have one of us coming for you.
