Ellie: Walter’s here until then. Stay with Bear?

Collin: That’s the plan. They’re sending him awful messages. I’m planning to run them out of town by nightfall

Ellie: Their ego is too big, Collin. It won’t be easy.

Ezra: Don’t care about easy, but they will go. I won’t have our omegas terrified or let them corner either of you alone.

Ellie: You can’t be everywhere at once. We have lives to live. But I have a feeling Lockwood has our back. I’m calling Micah and Tori.

Atlas: I’ll cancel my afternoon and head back

Dean: Already doing the same.

Collin: Good, we could use the backup. I don’t want to go to jail.

Ezra: I’ll go to jail, it’s fine. As long as one of us can watch the others.

Ellie: Um, no. We’re not taking things that far. Down boys.

Bear walked out of the bathroom then, smile faltering at the sight of his phone open.

“More texts?” he asked.

“Yes, they’re on their way now.”

Bear sat heavily on the bed, breathing shallow and quick as panic threatened to take over. I strode over to him and pulled him into my arms.

“You’re safe with us. They won’t touch you.” The promise was packed with every ounce of sincerity I felt. We’d gone from thinking they were pricks to being worried about Bear’s safety. I never expected things to escalate to this, but once I heard they were threatening, I didn’t trust them.

Anyone who could go from a threat to praise was dangerous.

“You won’t let them get to me?” The question was broken and quiet, my heart clenching as I held him, the promise falling from my lips without hesitation.

“Never.”

Ellie

Despite the timeline Collin saw through the messages, there was no sign of the Forrest Pack… or what was left of them. Nearly a week had passed since they’d warned they would be here in a few hours.

At this point, we were all perpetually on edge. However, we couldn’t just stop living our lives.

Collin and Bear had gone to the packhouse to work and stay out of the main drag in town most days. Everyone else was business as usual. It was our attempt to pretend things were just normal.

Bear and I saw very different sides of that pack. I didn’t discount his fear in the least, but I wondered if they thrived on intimidation and bravado. I wondered if this was their attempt to scare him further, telling Bear they were close and keeping their distance, amping up his anxiety as the hours and days passed by.

At this point, I wasn’t putting anything past them, including them escalating at any point.

The wind whipped through my open windows as I drove my truck out of town toward Poppy’s shop. It was a sunny day and my day off, and I couldn’t let it go to waste.

Plus, getting out of town had me breathing just a little bit easier.

“There you are, I’ve missed seeing you out here,” Poppy called out. “Though, Walter is always a pleasant visit.”

I laughed. “I think you’re the only one who would think that. He’s the town grump according to everyone else.”

“Nah,” she said with a playful grin. “He’s a sweetheart. Anything in particular today? I just got a new shipment of dried pomegranate!”

“You know I definitely need some of that! I’ll browse a bit as well,” I said as we walked inside. Poppy gave me my space as she gathered the new ingredient for me.
