“That’s my omega,” I told them one last time before climbing into the ambulance and shoving them aside. “I’m here, Bear.”

I was never the type to cry but right now, I felt like I could break down. Bear was barely recognizable. He was covered in blood and his skin was more purple than any other color. His scent was off, laced in copper and dirt. I was nearly in a blind rage by the time I finished taking stock of his injuries.

They hadn’t just attacked him, they’d mauled him. We’d be damn lucky if he got away without any broken bones or severe damage.

The most concerning was the blood matting his hair and the gashes on his face. Concussions would be the least of our worries, he could have a brain bleed or something.

I tried to press myself to the corner of the ambulance, letting the EMS workers climb in and stabilize my omega. The entire time they worked, a low growl echoed from my body, but I couldn’t make it stop. I held up my hands, letting them know to keep working, that I wasn’t going to interfere, and they seemed to understand. The betas were working diligently, and I could respect that, even in my angry haze.

The next two hours were a whirlwind of driving to the hospital and admitting Bear. After that, I was pacing the waiting room, waiting for answers. They’d rushed him into surgery almost as soon as they examined him. The doctor explained he had a collapsed lung and internal bleeding that would be fatal if they didn’t intervene.

Ezra and Micah were there the whole time. I heard them making phone calls but I couldn’t do more than pace.

At some point the rest of the pack arrived. Ellie was a flurry of tears as she rushed forward, crushing me in a hug.

Her presence broke the dam holding back my own emotions. Not a single one of our pack hung back in that moment, wrapping themselves around us and holding us as we found our composure. What little we had left.

When our tears finally dried, we broke apart. I wiped the wet tracks from her own cheeks as I breathed in her sweet scent like a drug, clinging to it desperately to help keep me from completely losing it.

“It was them, wasn’t it?” she questioned. I nodded and she closed her eyes, cursing low under her breath. “Tell me the police have them at least?”

Ezra was the one who spoke. “The last I heard they were questioning the people who found Bear. The witnesses who saw and chased off Trevor and Jacob,” he clarified. “I’m sure they’re going to try to run but I’d say by now the police have prepared for that. I called the station and explained everything that I knew, including the car Jacob drove, their names, descriptions, the works.”

“I hope they rot in prison for this,” she said, breaking down again. The twins dragged her over to a seat, cuddling around her and whispering gentle words as I picked up pacing again.

Every time the staff doorway opened, I would pause, waiting to see the doctor that I knew was working on my omega. I was disappointed more times than I could count.

The second the doctor walked out and didn’t give me a pitying look, I felt myself breathe for what felt like the first time.

“Is he going to be okay?” I demanded of the doctor. He looked exhausted and his indifferent mask was locked down tight. I was still holding onto hope, refusing to think the worst.

“We’re going to keep an eye on him overnight at least, if not for several days. There were a lot of open wounds we had to stitch and it took us a bit to stabilize him. But the surgery went well. I believe he will recover but he will be in intensive care until we’re in the clear.”

“Thank god,” Ellie sobbed out behind me. I felt a hand go to my shoulder, giving it a squeeze, and I took a deep breath, glad to have another alpha in our pack to help hold me together when I couldn’t do it myself.

“He’ll be under anesthesia for a little bit longer but he’s in recovery. He looks rough but we’ve cleaned him up the best we could. He has a temporary cast on his foot now, there was some damage there as well but according to x-rays it shouldn’t be an issue. We can go over the logistics of follow-ups and physical therapy later. For now, he’s in good hands and you can breathe a little easier.”

“Thank you,” I said sincerely, bowing my head in a show of respect. The entire pack did the same behind me, offering their own thanks.

The doctor gave us a small smile before disappearing through the double doors. I finally sat down, or collapsed really. I knew I wouldn’t breathe again until I could see our omega for myself.

“The police are here,” Ellie said. If not for the twins holding onto her she probably would have rushed them and demanded answers.

The sheriff made a beeline for us, meaning they knew exactly who we were.

Ezra stood to greet them, holding out a hand to shake.

“Hey there, Sheriff.” There was a familiarity between them and that had me letting out a breath of relief.

“Normally I wouldn’t come down here since the victim is being treated,” the sheriff said. “But I thought you guys deserved to know that we caught his attackers. Between the eye witnesses and parking lot footage, along with the car description you gave us, it didn’t take long. They were caught trying to hightail it out of town.”

“Fucking cowards,” Ezra said.

“That they are,” the sheriff agreed. “I was on scene before the paramedics. It was one of the worst things I’ve seen here in Lockwood.” The fact it had shaken the sheriff was insane. I was grateful someone broke up the fight before they killed him.

And I have no doubt they would have.

“What now?” Atlas asked. “Tell me they’re in jail?”
