"I climbed in," he said. "It wasn't hard. I watched them leave and knew I had to act."

"I guess you didn't account for the bond," I taunted, pulling my shirt aside to show him the bite mark. When we were together, I wouldn't let him bite me. As the realization set in he started to stand but Amos shoved him back into his seat.

Maybe it was stupid to goad him when the police weren't here yet, but I wanted him to be very aware that he had no place in my life.

"Your brothers treat me like I deserve. They love my independence that you hated. I asked them to bite me, to bond me in a way you were never allowed to do. See, even then I was protecting myself from monsters like you. There is no future for us, you made that decision and I'm glad you did. Take your intentions and shove them up your ass. I guarantee the next time you try to approach me, you'll die."

"You almost did," Amos said, letting out a dark laugh.

Evrin glared over at Amos at the comment.

"Give me one fucking chance," Silas begged his older brother. When Amos shook his head he shrugged and looked down at my attacker. "You're dead to me, Evrin. I never want to see you again."

"You're on your own now," Jackson agreed.

With that, Jackson turned his back on his friend, wrapping an arm around me and leading me back inside. We stopped in the kitchen long enough to wash Evrin's blood from his hands before we took a seat on the couch waiting for the cops to arrive.

Detective Grady led the charge, several cop cars outside. Jackson got up and let them inside, directing them to the backyard.

It was like an out-of-body experience as I watched them lead a cuffed Evrin to the cars. They tried to ask me questions but I couldn't focus on them.

Finally, Grady shooed everyone out, sitting down with just the four of us.

He asked questions and the guys mostly answered. My head was spinning and the stress was getting to me. I felt hotter than ever. My impending heat was refusing to be ignored.

Grady shifted uncomfortably and tucked his shirt over his nose.

"Look, I think we have everything we need and I think you guys have some issues to handle. I think the stress might have..." he trailed off and gestured to me.

"That's a great idea," Amos said, his voice dark and rough as he led the detective out of our home. He armed the security system again and locked the front and back doors.

"I think I'm in heat now," I managed to choke out, the entire room shifting as I tried to stand, sending me pitching forward. Someone caught me before I hit the floor.

This wasn't how heat was supposed to be...

My eyes rolled back, darkness overtaking me, and I gave in willingly.

"Serenity!" I called out as I caught her, stopping her before she hit the floor. Scooping her up I carried her upstairs. Amos and Jackson trailing behind me.

"You guys get her in the shower, try to cool her off a little bit, it might buy us some time. I wouldn't bother redressing her, though, just get her in bed.

Jackson and I followed orders. Generally a shower with Serenity was sexy and intoxicating but this one was just worrying. She didn't wake as we stripped her down, her skin so hot that it was almost uncomfortable to hold her. I kept her in my arms as Jackson turned on the water and I stepped inside, not caring that I was getting soaked.

He washed her gently, making sure that our omega was clean and her temperature was going down. Some of the tension drained from her body and she slept a bit more soundly. This definitely wasn't a normal heat, or at least it didn't start like a normal one. Then again, I didn't know what Serenity's version of normal was, yet.

When she was clean, he turned off the water and we dried her before laying her in her nest.

She was sleeping soundly for a few minutes before it amped back up. My chest tightened as I watched my omega writhe on the covers. We tried covering her body but she kicked them off the moment we did. She didn't settle until Jackson wrapped a few of her stolen items around her. She wrapped her arms around them and finally calmed.

Amos stepped in, jaw tense.

"They're not answering. I left a really long, detailed voice message but that's the best I can do without going down there myself."

"Even if you did, they're likely off dock by now," I pointed out.
