My heart breaks for Horse, and Maggie. Shit.

I’ve known Horse since I was a baby. He and my dad were extremely close. I kind of grew up with his kids. We were all different ages but all of us club kids kind of stuck together.

Shit! His kids.

Bull is currently deployed in Iraq and Claudia is in her first year of college.

My heart speeds up as I think back to five years ago when I was sitting in this same hospital, waiting for them to tell me my dad didn’t make it.

I shove out of the chair, running for the exit as the cold sweat settles along my skin.

I need fresh air. I need to breathe.

I can’tbreathe.

I have to get out of here.

Istare behind her as she takes off for the exit. Maybe having her come here wasn’t the best idea.

Ghost leans back in his chair as I approach again.

“Go take care of her. We’ll call you as soon as we know anything,” he says soberly.

I give a curt nod, then turn and rush to the exit.

Coming out of the emergency room doors, I look to the left and then to the right, not seeing Pebbles anywhere.

I catch a glimpse of red over the back of a bench near the parking lot, so I head in that direction. Pebbles is sitting on the bench, bent in half with her head between her knees taking deep breaths.

I take a seat on the concrete bench next to her and drape my arm across the back of it. “Breathe, babe.”

She leans back, heaving breaths in and out. Her soft hair brushes against my hand and I run my fingers through the loose ends.

I scoot closer to her on the bench, running my fingertips along her cheek, pushing her hair back behind her ear. “Are you okay?”

She looks out at the parking lot, her eyes zoned out on one of the cars.

What I wouldn’t fucking give for her to just respond. I don’t need much. Just one fucking word.

I let out a sigh when she doesn’t, running my fingers through her hair while she remains staring ahead of her. I sit with her in silence for a while, allowing her to just be.

I can’t imagine how she’s feeling inside right now, and I don’t pretend to know. The only thing I know I can do is be here for her if she needs me.

My phone vibrates against my leg. I pull it out of my back pocket and see there’s a text from Flame.

It’s not good, brother. You still here?

I shake my head somberly and text back.

Sitting out front.

A few minutes later, Flame comes out of the entrance, his hand rubbing the back of his neck. Whatever he has to say doesn’t look good at all based on his expression.

I push off from the bench, nodding to the side. We stop a few feet away from the bench that Pebbles remains on.
