Page 30 of Trigger's Forever

“Multiple broken bones and swelling in his brain. He’s in a medically induced coma. The doctor said they’ll have to do surgery on his abdomen– something about internal bleeding.”

Fuck.I don’t know much about medical shit, but that doesn’t fucking sound good.

“Fuck, man,” I say. Putting my hands on my thighs, I bend over and let out a frustrated breath. “What the fuck happened?”

Flame shakes his head. “We don’t fucking know. They ran the few tests that they could, and the only thing we know for sure was it wasn’t anything with him. He either got ran off the road, or someone hit him. They couldn’t tell for sure at the scene.”

“Has anyone gotten ahold of Bull yet?”

Bull is Horse’s son as well as a member of the club. He joined the club right after he turned eighteen and then left for the army shortly after. He’s been on active duty since. Bull’s only a few years older than me, but I didn’t join the club until I was twenty-three, so we haven’t had too much time in the club together at the same time. We’ve really only crossed paths when he’s been home on leave, but I can tell from just those few short visits that he’s a good fucking guy.

I can’t pretend I would know what it would feel like to get a call that one of your parents might not make it, but I can imagine what I would do if I got a call about Ben.

Just the fact that it’s Horse in there fighting for his life is enough to knock me on my ass. Any one of my brothers being in that position would have me taking a step back.

“Ghost is going to make the call now. Maggie called Claudia, too. Razor’s going to go pick her up.”

Claudia, Maggie and Horse’s daughter, just started her first year of college. She got a full ride cheerleading scholarship to a university in Texas. Horse was a damn proud father when he spoke about either one of his kids and all of their accomplishments.

I hope when Pebbles has the babies that I am half the father that most of my brothers are.

I nod, listening to Flame relay everything the ER doctor said while kicking a rock across the pavement. “It’d be fucking easier if we still had somebody that understood this shit,” Flame huffs in frustration.

“I know, man. But we’re better off without him now.”

A few years ago, Ringer got arrested, and our former president was killed. After all of that went down, Ghost reconstructed the entire club. No more selling drugs, guns, and women. He changed everything around. A few of the guys who couldn’t get on board with Ghost’s new vision left the club and started over in a new town. Pike, our old club doctor, was one of the men that took off soon after the rebuild.

“We’ll get through it, Flame. Horse will pull through.”

“I hope you’re fucking right, Trig,” Flame sighs as he shakes his head in exasperation. “I hope you’re right.”

I turn to watch Pebbles, who is in the exact spot I left her in a few minutes ago.

“Why don’t you take her home,” Flame says and nods to Pebbles. “She doesn’t need to be around this shit.”

“I’m gonna go inside and talk to Ghost real quick. You should talk to her before we go. Y’all are her family too.”

Once I step back through the ER doors, the air conditioning hits my skin like ice. Most of the time I never realize how truly fucking hot it is until the A/C hits me, and then every drop of sweat on my body makes itself known. I fan my shirt out to get the air flow under my cut to cool off.

I drop on my haunches next to Tank. “What can I do?”

Maria sniffles, rubbing her nose with a tissue as she holds onto Maggie’s hand with her other one.

Tank shakes his head, sighing. “There’s nothing any of us can do but wait.”

“Is everyone gonna stay up here until he’s out of surgery?” I ask, looking around the room and noticing every one but Winnie is still seated in a circle. “I can grab dinner and bring it back.”

“Thank you, Trigger. They are moving him up to surgery now. The nurse said she would let us know where to go as soon as she got back from taking him.” Maggie dabs at her eyes with her sleeve. “Claire is already bringing us something from the diner.”

I lean over and squeeze Maggie’s free hand in mine. I can’t imagine what she must be going through right now. This shit fucking sucks.

I turn my eyes back to Tank’s and lock on his steely gaze. “I’m going to take Pebbles home. Call me if you guys need anything at all.”

Tank slaps his hand down on my shoulder and squeezes. “I’ll let you know.”

Flame has his arm around Pebbles as I approach the bench. Silent tears track down her cheeks as she kicks the ground in front of her.

Not knowing what’s going on inside of her head is fucking killing me. I would rather be tortured day and night than to see her like this.
