While walking towards the registers, my phone vibrates in my pocket. I dig it out, not even paying attention to who's calling.

“Yo.”

Tiny’s deep voice breaks through the speaker. “Fuckers hacked into all of the cameras on the street.”

“Fuck.” An older lady a few feet away turns and scowls at me. I wave a hand in apology and lower my voice. “That doesn’t sound good.”

“Fuck no it’s not.” Tiny’s fingers clack against his keyboard in the background. “I’m trying to override the city's street cams, but I’m having a hell of a time. It’s never been this difficult before.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means whoever the fuck blocked the system is fucking good.”

“Good? As in, better than –?”

“You better not even finish that fucking sentence, fucker,” Tiny yells.

I chuckle at his annoyance and quickly catch up to Pebbles as she gets in line. She’s crazy if she thinks I’m letting her pay for those damn blankets.

“Anything else?” I ask Tiny.

“Nah, just wanted to give you the update that there is pretty much no fucking update at this point.”

I nod, even though he can’t see me. “Alright. Well, we’re still in the city. We'll be back in a half hour.”

“Oh shit! How’d the appointment go? What are the little fuckers?” Tiny laughs.

I smile at Pebbles's curious expression. “I’m gonna let mama announce that one, brother.”

Pebbles cheeks blush when I call her mama, and I make note to call her that again. Seeing her blush like that is one of my favorite sights.

“I’ll see ya’ soon then,” Tiny says, not waiting for me to respond before he hangs up.

“You’re not going to tell anyone?” Pebbles asks, quietly.

I shake my head with a frown. “Nah. I figured that announcement belongs to you. I’m just happy to be here.”

Pebbles giggles as we move forward in the line.

“Who are you going to tell first?” I ask her while we’re waiting for the customer in front of us to finish checking out.

“Mm…” She taps her manicured finger against her chin in thought. “Maria and Tank, definitely.”

I nod my head at her choice. “Why is that?”

“Maria’s always been more of a mom to me than my mother ever was. Maria and Tank are going to really be the only grandparents the boys ever know.”

Hearing her reference to them as the boys has a smile pulling at my lips. “What about Maggie and Horse? Bones?”

She rolls her eyes playfully. “Of course everyone is going to be their family, but Maria and Tank are different,” she says, shrugging her shoulders.

“Alright, Red.” I put my hand to her lower back, guiding her forward as the woman in front of us pushes her cart toward the exit.

The cashier is a twenty something blonde. Pretty enough, but not pretty enough to take my attention away from my Red.

I notice the cashier’s multiple glances my way out of the corner of my eye. Pebbles takes the bag in her hand and waits as the cashier reads off the total. When I pull the cash from my wallet and try to hand it to her, she takes a hold of my hand, unnecessarily holding on for way too long until I look up to her with awhat the fucklook. She looks back at me and blushes. I roll my eyes and turn to Pebbles, who is glaring daggers at the cashier.

I feel a smirk beginning to pull at my lips. Pebbles reaches forward and snatches the money from the girl before stomping away. I laugh behind her and turn to the cashier with a wink. “Mama’s territorial.”
