Dani knew that. She did. But as Nana used to say, there was a difference between knowing something and believing it.

“You have to let him in,” Nyla continued. “That’s the only way it’s going to work. As a partnership where the decisions that affect you both you make together. And if you don’t agree, talk it out and work through it. He’s not going to leave.”

“But he has to learn, too. He can be my partner, but I don’t need a father. He can’t keep things from me because he doesn’t want to worry me.”

“I think he learned his lesson about that the last time. But here’s some more food for thought: Did you ever consider why you fell in love with a man who’s clearly a protector? Maybe a part of you was seeking someone to take care of you. After years of having to do it all on your own.”

“Wow.” Dani tilted her head back and eyed Nyla down the length of her nose. “Haveyoubeen hiding things from me? Do you have a side hustle as a therapist?”

Nyla sucked her teeth. “Girl, no! I just got a new script. It’s for the lead in a thriller. A psychiatrist. Even better, I don’t have to audition. If I want the part, it’s mine.”

“Ma’am!” Dani said, snapping her fingers.

They laughed and hugged each other, and as they drew apart, Dani noticed they were attracting attention. Several people stared at them, then reached for their phones.

“That’s our cue to audi this bitch,” Nyla said, standing.

Dani glanced around and found what she’d been looking for. “See that walking path that borders the park? If you go left, it winds its way around a couple of apartment buildings and ends at a drugstore parking lot. We were never supposed to go that way because it’s a little isolated, but you know kids.”

“After you,” Nyla said. Then she raised her voice. “Anyway, are you going to the homecoming dance? I don’t knowwhatI’m going to wear!”

“What is this,Vampire Diariescirca 2010?” Dani laughed and rolled her eyes.

“You’ll thank me when we get out of this without ending up on TikTok,” Nyla said, grabbing her arm and heading toward the path.

Once they were away from the playground—and it looked like no one had followed them—Dani sent a quick text to Antoine with instructions on where to meet. They hurried to the pickup spot while her head buzzed with all she’d uncovered.

The first thing she needed to do was figure out what she wanted. A bunch of answers flooded into her mind, and all would have to be identified and pondered, but there was one response that rang the clearest and loudest.

She wanted to be with Jameson.

So what did she need to do to make that happen?

“Thank you, Ellis,” Jameson said, offering a weary smile to his butler.

Ellis nodded and closed the front door of Primrose Park behind him. “Sir?”

Surprised at this deviation from their routine, Jameson paused. After a long day of meetings with his private secretary, solicitors, and the heads of various charitable organizations, he craved the quiet stillness of his office. Whatever Ellis needed, it was delaying that indulgence.

“One of the housemaids reported an issue in a bathroom during her cleaning rounds. It’s the one in the east wing near the Celestial Bedroom.”

He wasn’t a bloody plumber!

But he stiffened as Ellis’s words penetrated.

East wing.
