Because she regretted what happened as much as he did?

Or to finally put an end to everything?

Not knowing, but after a month of longing for this moment while simultaneously being aware this may be the last time he saw her, he went with the truth. “I’ve missed you, love.”

“I’ve missed you, too. And I’m so sorry, baby.”

She stood and rushed into his arms.

Thank God!

Shudders racked her body and he alternated between rubbing her back and readjusting his embrace, holding her tighter and tighter. He never thought he’d feel this—or her!—again, and heneeded time to savor the experience. To imprint it on his heart and never take it for granted.

“Awww, Dani. Love. It’s okay.”

“No, it’s not. You were right about a lot of what you said.” Her words were muffled, spoken into his neck.

He shivered and pressed a kiss into her curls. “I should’ve been more understanding.”

She pulled back to look at him and her beautiful brown eyes were luminous with unshed tears. Was it possible she was more beautiful than he remembered? “How about, in the future, you’re more understanding and I won’t run away?”

He exhaled, his chest finally releasing the tension it’d held in its grip all these weeks. So, therewouldbe a future for them.

“Deal.”

Her luminous smile began mending the cracks in his heart.

“Come, sit.” She took his hand and led him over to the bench. “What happened after I left? Was the queen mad at you?”

“Yes,” he said, pulling her down onto his lap and settling her ass over his growing erection, “but I didn’t attend the banquet, so I wasn’t privy to her wrath until later.”

She wiggled her hips. “And was the state visit ultimately successful?”

“You didn’t hear about it?”

“No. I couldn’t. It was too hard.”

“I understand,” he said, sliding a hand to the nape of her neck and bringing her lips to his. Their kiss set his world to rights. “The prime minister kept her word, and the state visit went according to plan. Plenty of pictures, meetings, and the exchanging of gifts. She didn’t utter one word on the topic of independence.”

She frowned. “That’s disappointing.”

“As soon as she got back to St. Lucia, however, she issued a visitdebrief statement where she mentioned it all, including the issue of the bombing of the childcare center and the palace’s lackluster response. She declared St. Lucia’s intention to call for a referendum and urged her fellow Commonwealth Nations to be proactive in determining the feelings of their own citizens.”

Dani brought her closed fist to her mouth. “Damn.”

Jameson nodded. “Just one of the words the queen was heard yelling.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through that.”

“It’s fine,” he said, marveling at his current largesse when actually dealing with the queen had been a nightmare. It proved his theory that having Dani in his arms meant he could deal with anything.

She gasped and shifted on his lap. “What about Calanthe? If the queen was that angry about the visit, did she take it out on your mother?”

“She tried to. But her threats were meaningless.”

“Because Catherine was true toherword?”

“Because my mother is moving.”
