For now, we were making it work and Lily had a far better social life than I did. She’d spend her days at the park, made friends at a diner, and was a favorite at the craft store Kelly loved to visit. It warmed my heart that she wasn’t missing out on any fun.

I glanced at the clock on my laptop. Kyle would be in any minute.

My desk certainly looked occupied now. The right was stacked with Kyle’s mail, both in-coming and out-going, I had a massive desktop calendar that included all ok Kyle’s appointments and meetings that were also posted to our shared digital calendar, and of course, I had a picture of Lily.

It was weird how quickly I felt comfortable in the office. But, because Kyle was the CEO no one had really stopped by to chat or introduce themselves. The other c-suite employees I’d met were all nice enough, but they were either rarely in the office, or only spoke to their own assistants. It was an odd dynamic, but I figured I needed to give it more time. I didn’t even eat lunch down in the cafeteria. Kyle always had lunch brought up for us and we ate together.

It was nice and I enjoyed it. Probably a little too much.

Then, flashbacks to the morning after our sex-fest at the condo came back to my mind and I remembered all over again.

Kyle claimed to have never liked me. I would’ve disagreed with that statement, but then I thought back to the very first time I tried to kiss him and how he totally shot me down. That certainly seemed like the actions of someone who wasn’t into me. And then, of course, there was the way he practically threw me out of his bedroom the morning after.

Maybe I was being too hard on him. Maybe I wasn’t.

But, it was the only thing keeping me from jumping him most days.

Well, that and the fact that Lily and I needed money to survive.

The elevator dinged and that meant I had about forty seconds to get Kyle’s coffee ready. I knew just how he liked it, even when he insisted he wanted it black. I moved out from behind my desk and over to the far wall of the to my right and poured him a mug from the pot. Then I added a raw sugar packet and a splash of cream. With his mug in my hand and his important mail from that morning tucked under my arm, I waited for him with a bright smile.

“Good morning, boss,” I said.

“Will you ever give this up?” he asked.

He hated this game I played, the perfect employee game, but it seemed to work for us. It helped me keep my distance. I pretended to be some kind of Stepford employee and he pretended it hate it, even though I knew he thought it was funny.

“Don’t forget your coffee,” I said, holding out the mug for him as I followed him into his office.

Kyle wore ash gray slacks I hadn’t seen before and w white button down, no jacket, no tie. It was the most causal he looked in the office so far and damn it was sexy. I set his mug down on the desk as he took his chair and fired up his laptop.

“If you’re the perfect employee, why don’t you listen to me when I say I don’t need you to pour me coffee every morning?”

“Hmm,” I said thoughtfully. “Good question. I’ll just take this back.” I reached for mug, but Kyle stopped me.

“No. It’s already here. I might as well drink it.”

Kyle took a sip from the mug and even though I knew better, I carefully watched his mouth as he did. The light stubble dotting his jaw was doing something to me. I remembered so vividly what it felt like against my skin. I shifted where I stood, pressing my thighs together under my skirt. Kyle noticed, he always noticed.

“You—uh—” I cleared my throat. “You’re morning is wide open. I was worried I missed a meeting or call, but I triple checked and you have nothing.”

Kyle raised an eyebrow at me. “You? Miss something? Never.”

“Well, stranger things have happened,” I teased.

“I actually wanted to talk to—” Kyle was interrupted by the phone on his desk ringing. I reached for it, but he held up his hand. “It’s okay, I’ve got it. It’s just accounting.”

I nodded and headed out of his office and back to my desk. Even though I’d only been from my laptop for a few minutes, I had thirty-seven new emails. There was never a shortage of people trying to contact Kyle. Everything from serious business proposals to women claiming to be carrying his child came though his inbox. I had to sort through them all.

Sometime later, after reading a particularly interesting email from a woman who wanted to be Kyle’s maid, that also included nudes I was sure I was going to be fired for having on my company issued laptop, Jerry came walking down the hall and stopped at my desk.

“I didn’t mean to look at those pics,” I blurted out.

Jerry laughed. “What pics?”

“Wait,” I said, closing my laptop. “Why are you up here?”

Jerry squinted his eyes at me. “Why are your cheeks red?”
