I shook my head, but he kept his hand in place. “You’re rich. You can buy yourself whatever you want.”

Kyle shrugged and brought his other hand to my hip. “I guess that’s true but what I want I can’t buy. Or at least I don’t want to have to buy it.” Kyle laughed and I had an idea of what he was talking about, but I wanted him to spell it out.

“Okay, so what do you want?” I asked.

“You,” he whispered just before connecting his lips with mine. “Come back to my house with me.”

“Kyle, be serious,” I said, laughing and feeling so giddy I was back to my fifteen-year-old self, drooling over him.

“I am being serious. All I want is you, Emma. Come home with me, and give me you for my birthday. Okay?”

I smiled and nodded. “Okay.”

Kyle’s sparkly blue eyes sparkled even more. “Just, okay? I thought you wanted me.”

I laughed and kissed him. “I’m going to give you the best birthday sex of your life.”

Kyle bit his bottom lip, and it sent a jolt right to my core. “That’s what I wanted to hear. Now, you go out there first I need to…calm down and then I’ll be out.”

“Okay, but we can’t hang out too long. I need to get back home, okay?” I told him, hoping we could have amazing sex and get me home at a decent time.”

Kyle adjusted the collar of his shirt. “That’s a solid excuse. You tell Krista you need to get back home to Lily and I’ll just vanish. She knows I don’t want to be here.”

I smiled at him again, totally unable to help it. “Perfect.”

“Now get out of here.” Playfully swatting me out of the room.

I hurried out of the private office and then ran right into the bathroom. After using the facilities, I looked in the mirror, smoothing down my hair and straightening out my dress. I just had to hope Krista was too distracted to notice I was gone for a bit.

I picked up a nearly empty drink discarded by the bar and made my way back over to the VIP section, hoping it would make me look like I’d been hanging around. Krista was distracted, kissing Dante as they swayed back and forth to the loud, fast music when I squeezed past the bouncer and sat down in one of the empty chairs. The section had filled up since I left, I recognized some of Krista’s teacher friends from work, Dante’s brother Damon, and even Kyle and Krista’s cousins from out of town.

I assumed all the new people were enough to make my absences go unnoticed as soon as my butt hit the plush seat, Krista made her way over to me with Dante trialing behind.

“Emma!” she yelled. “Where the hell have you been? I almost had them page you.”

“What?” I forced out a laugh. “I was getting a drink.”

Krista’s strappy, gold dress looked like it was glowing under the strobe lights in the club and her eyelids shimmered with her sparkly makeup.

“We have two of our own bartenders, so I know you’re lying.” I could tell she was taking in my flushed cheeks, my mussed hair, and my relaxed demeanor.

“Hey, Dante,” I said, stopping her from saying something else.

“Hey, Emma.”

I quickly shot up from the chair so we could hug, and I’d be able to maneuver away from Krista, but she was on to me and grabbed my arm.

“Where were you?” she asked, a hint of mischief in her voice like she thought I was somewhere good. Before I could answer, Kyle rejoined the group and I didn’t know if it was my guilt conscious or if it was reality, but he looked more disheveled than I did. “Emma.” Krista’s face hardened. “Where were you?”

“I got a drink and then I went to the bathroom.” The words felt terrible leaving my mouth. I hated lying to her.

Dante turned his attention to his brother and Krista moved me closer to the back of our section, near the wall and the furthest point away from the DJ. I knew she was upset but it was her birthday, and I didn’t want her to be.

“Look, I’m not going to ask you again because it’s clear you don’t want me to know,” she said. “And I feel like somethings been going on with you two—”

“Krista, I—”

“I’m not asking, Emma,” she said cutting me off. “I don’t want to know. I just need to say this to you and then we never have to speak of this again. I love Kyle. He’s my brother and my twin. He’s a very, very good man. We both know that. But he’s a terrible boyfriend and so help me Emma, I don’t even think he’d be a good dad. Honestly, you’re too good for him. You have tour head on your shoulders and you’re selfless to a fault. Kyle is shellfish. His needs always come first, and I can’t sit by and let you continue to pine after him.”
