“I’ll have you home safely in no time, sir,” the kid said before shutting us in.

“Wow,” Emma said with a laugh. “This is the nicest limo I’ve ever seen,” she said, running her right hand over the supple black leather of the seats.

“And have you seen a lot?” I asked.

“Well, there was junior prom and then senior prom, then my wedding, of course,” she said, ticking them off on her fingers. “I guess that’s it.”

“More than me,” I admitted.

“Well, that will probably change soon,” Emma said.

I shook my head. “Why does everyone keep thinking I’m going to make all these drastic changes any day now? Sure, I bought the new house, but that was more for my family and for me, but other than that—”

“You have the other house too,” Emma interrupted me to point out. “You can’t forget the ski condo.”

I laughed. “Sure, you got me there. I have multiple homes and—”

“The car service,” she said gesturing to the limo we sat in.

“Right, I was trying to explain that—”

“And a whole building named after you with your company inside. I mean, you have me even. How many people do you think have an executive assistant?”

I placed my hand on Emma’s exposed knee. Her skin was so damn smooth I wondered how it was even possible.

“Are you drunk?” I asked. “Because if so, I’m taking you straight home.”

“No,” Emma said with a laugh. “I only had one drink.” She placed her hand over mine. “Just nervous, I guess. When I think about how…how rich you are it’s kind of intimidating.”

I wanted to laugh, I didn’t think she was being serious, but the look on her face told me not to. “Emma, I’m still the same guy. Most of that doesn’t matter or change anything.”

“Well…” she hedged. “I was intimidated by you back then too.”

“Emma come on.” I pressed my head against the seat and closed my eyes. She couldn’t have been serious.

“You come on,” she shot back. “You’re the one who turned me down. Remember?”

That got my attention. My eyes sprung open, and I sat up, turning to face her as much as I could in the back of the car. “That’s not what happened that night.”

“Oh, so you do remember that night?” she asked.

“Of course, I do, Emma. I liked you back then and I was fully intimidated byyou. When you tried to kiss me, I—” I was loathe to admit what I was about to say to her, but it was the truth, and it was probably time it came out. “I knew I wasn’t good enough for you. I was such a dick back then and—”

“Back then?” she asked with a raised eyebrow.

“You seem to have a thing for cutting me off,” I said. “And yeah, okay, maybe I’m still a dick.”

“Thank you,” she said with a laugh. “That was all I wanted.”

“But Emma, seriously. I was very—let’s say—inexperienced back then and I was so into you I wanted to impress you. Plus…you were…you. I always wanted to impress you.” I didn’t know where this honesty was coming from. These were things I never planned on telling her, or maybe they were just things I never thought I’d have the chance to tell her.

Emma was changing me. She was making me want to be a better man, but I still wasn’t sure if it was what I wanted. I wanted her, I knew that without question, but I wasn’t sure if I was ready to be a family man.

Maybe I was still a scared punk.

Maybe I was just being honest.

Either way, I needed more time to figure it out but the idea of being without her physically hurt me.
