Okay, he had not expected that. How the hell was he supposed to respond to that?

“I never had feelings for her until she was an adult,” he admitted, wanting to make sure that was clear to his friend.

Shaking his head, Rock slapped Kade on the arm. “I know you didn’t, Kade. I know even if you had, you wouldn’t have acted on it until she was an adult. You’re one of the best men I’ve ever known, and I wouldn’t have wanted Remi to end up with anyone else.”

His shoulders dropped as he stared at the older man in disbelief. All this time, he’d been worried about what Rock would think and afraid it would ruin their friendship.

Stepping forward, Kade wrapped his arms around Rock. “Thanks, man.”

Rock hugged him back, and when he pulled away, Kade was sure the man’s eyes were shining with tears as he pulled Remi into his arms.

“I love you and I’m so proud of you for letting this side of you out. I know Kade will take good care of you.”

Remi looked up to her dad with tears dripping down her cheeks. “You knew about me being…”

“Little? Yes, honey. I’ve known for a long time. I know some of it is probably because I wasn’t there for you when you were young, and I’m so sorry for that. I wish things had been different.”

She swiped at the tears on her face. “It’s okay, Dad. I understand. I’m just happy you’re here now.”

Rock nodded and smiled at both of them before settling his gaze on Kade. “You’re one of my closest friends, but if you ever hurt my daughter, I will cut you to pieces and toss all the bits in the ocean. Clear?”

He nodded. “Clear. I won’t ever hurt her. She’s the piece of my heart that’s been missing all this time.”

The older man nodded. “I know you wouldn’t hurt her, but I just had to make it clear. Now, come on, let’s go have dinner.”

Remi grabbed both their hands as they made their way into the community room. “I’m going to go ask Bear to make a baked chicken breast and some caulimash for you, Dad.”

As soon as she took off into the kitchen, Rock looked at Kade and groaned. “Fuck. I’m never going to get to eat good food again with her hanging around here more.”

Kade laughed. “Guess you better find your own Little to fuss over you so she doesn’t worry so much.”

Rock grunted and shook his head. “I don’t think so. But never say never, I guess. I’m going to go grab fries from the table before she comes back out. Excuse me.”

Chuckling, Kade nodded and went into the kitchen where Remi was giving Bear strict instructions for no oil or butter to be used on her dad’s dinner.

Kade walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her. “Your dad is a big boy and can make his own choices for food, Princess.”

She turned and narrowed her eyes at him, putting her hands on her hips. “Unless you want dry chicken and caulimash, I suggest you stay out of it, Daddy.”

Her eyes immediately widened as she realized she’d called him Daddy right in front of Bear, but the large burly man just chuckled.

“It’s okay, Remi. You’re allowed to be yourself here,” Bear told her.

She nodded at him and then turned her narrowed gaze back to Kade, who just put his hands in the air.

“I don’t want dry chicken, so I’m shutting up and going to go eat what everyone else is having,” he said as he backed out of the kitchen.

As he left, he heard Bear and Remi both laughing and he shook his head. She was definitely going to keep him on his toes, that was for sure. But he wouldn’t want it any other way.

Before he made it to the table, Storm and Steele walked up to him with grim looks on their faces and Kade knew something had happened.

“Can we talk in private?” Steele asked.

Nodding, he followed the men down the hall to Storm’s apartment. When the door was closed behind them, Steele held out an envelope. “This was left on the gate this morning.”

Clenching his jaw, he opened the envelope and pulled out the handwritten letter.
